[00:01:05] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm a dentist to podcast or in a continual learner, a continuing education student today.

[00:01:14] [SPEAKER_00]: I am recording here in my hotel room, up in rural Bel-Air, Michigan.

[00:01:19] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm where at the Shanty Creek Resort, it is the annual Better Meeting, Better Society Fall Meeting.

[00:01:28] [SPEAKER_00]: I've been listening to Dr. Armin Mirzayan for a couple of days now and he finishes up tomorrow on Sunday.

[00:01:34] [SPEAKER_00]: And then we'll head home. So it's been great.

[00:01:37] [SPEAKER_00]: I've run into a couple listeners so it's nice to see people but also this is kind of continuing education.

[00:01:44] [SPEAKER_00]: I've taken for since I got out of dental school basically.

[00:01:46] [SPEAKER_00]: So this is a tradition. It's fun. My dad and I came up on Thursday afternoon and we watched the lecture all day for

[00:01:56] [SPEAKER_00]: I day and half day today and I wrote my mountain bike. I got to record a couple different podcasts with Armin and Damian that's all

[00:02:06] [SPEAKER_00]: be putting out later this week probably.

[00:02:08] [SPEAKER_00]: It's been great. And of course we go out for dinner and talk with lots of dentist friends.

[00:02:12] [SPEAKER_00]: It's cool because my dad sees a lot of his friends from dental school and from his dental career.

[00:02:18] [SPEAKER_00]: I think he really enjoys it. He just turned 82 years old and he's still totally in the thick of all of it.

[00:02:26] [SPEAKER_00]: Most of the people that we know at the Better Society, he's known for a long time in his career.

[00:02:32] [SPEAKER_00]: It's just fun. There's a lot of history here for us and so it's really good.

[00:02:38] [SPEAKER_00]: We rented a condo at the Great condo, tons of room and they're watching the University of Michigan football game right now.

[00:02:44] [SPEAKER_00]: I just got back from mountain biking over at a place called Glacial Hills that was pretty spectacular and we're going to go out for dinner in a little while.

[00:02:52] [SPEAKER_00]: So it's been great.

[00:02:54] [SPEAKER_00]: I haven't done a lot of in-person CE recently.

[00:02:58] [SPEAKER_00]: And I regret in-person CE as much as COVID may have really kind of kind of killed it a little bit.

[00:03:08] [SPEAKER_00]: In-person CE isn't quite the same as it used to be before 2020 in some ways, in my life for sure.

[00:03:13] [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it doesn't help that my kids have tons of activity so it's kind of hard to get away and do the traveling.

[00:03:20] [SPEAKER_00]: But I try and make an effort to get to the Better Meeting and like I'm definitely planning on Chicago Midwintering.

[00:03:26] [SPEAKER_00]: Maybe the Greater New York Meeting and this sort of thing.

[00:03:30] [SPEAKER_00]: But this is a great tradition and I continue to love this meeting so it's been great.

[00:03:36] [SPEAKER_00]: I've learned a lot and I think in-person CE has a thing.

[00:03:44] [SPEAKER_00]: I've experienced it over my life as I've taken continuing education, particularly stuff that really engages me.

[00:03:50] [SPEAKER_00]: One of the things that the very best CE does is it engages you in a way that I feel like particularly for clinical CE.

[00:03:59] [SPEAKER_00]: Vers CE where you're learning a technique or you're finding a technique that you know already.

[00:04:04] [SPEAKER_00]: Continuing education instructors or people who are teaching generally, you're taking a course from them because you think that they're doing something the right way.

[00:04:12] [SPEAKER_00]: And one of the things that I need to remember is that the right way is there's a lot of right ways.

[00:04:19] [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so what I mean by that is it's like if you really in the thick of it, if you're hit the flow and you're really understanding what they're talking about and you're really enjoying what they're saying.

[00:04:30] [SPEAKER_00]: I tend to think oh my gosh they're really doing it the right way. This is the way I have to do it. They're doing it the right way.

[00:04:34] [SPEAKER_00]: And it's like part of it is part of it is is that you know an engaging presenter can really explain to you how they're doing it well and you're deciding you're comparing it to how you do things.

[00:04:46] [SPEAKER_00]: And in some ways, sure they're way that they're doing it might be better and you can learn things from it. In some ways you need to know that they're doing it their their way because of their experience because of the way that they practice because of where they practice because of their office because of who they work with because of just a lot to it. So it's.

[00:05:03] [SPEAKER_00]: I think for me I'm pretty suggestible and especially if I'm kind of in the thick of it, I'm like I was trying to picture how am I going to do exactly what they're doing in my office and the reality is I don't think it needs to be the exactly it's you need to remember that.

[00:05:16] [SPEAKER_00]: You still have a way of doing things that you're office and it's not going to necessarily be adaptable. Maybe in some cases, for the most part you just kind of have to people talk about grabbing the pearls or picking up the pearls and that's kind of what I'm going to talk about here.

[00:05:28] [SPEAKER_00]: The best C.E. You're excited.

[00:05:31] [SPEAKER_00]: The presenter is doing a good job. You're vibing with their your vibing with their presentation, you're understanding it, you're kind of soaking up how they're doing it.

[00:05:40] [SPEAKER_00]: And that's a special kind of C.E. headspace, right? Like you're looking at their slides and you know, they might have video.

[00:05:48] [SPEAKER_00]: But Armin had tons of video showing all the different things he was doing with digital demonstrates. It was mind blowing and it was really great.

[00:05:54] [SPEAKER_00]: And so I was in the middle of it.

[00:05:56] [SPEAKER_00]: And one of the things that is frustrating about is when you're in the C.E. and you can kind of get into the headspace of what they're talking about.

[00:06:05] [SPEAKER_00]: What happens is a couple days later, you've taken a bunch of notes and you've decided you're going to go back and you can't get into that same headspace because you were kind of in the flow of their lecture and their presentation.

[00:06:17] [SPEAKER_00]: Because your life, your real life, your office, the way you do things doesn't maybe match the way that they do things or whatever.

[00:06:26] [SPEAKER_00]: And so it's hard to get in that same brain space that you were in during the presentation.

[00:06:31] [SPEAKER_00]: And I found that to be the case always. And so but a lot of times you don't think about that while you're in the middle of the C.E.

[00:06:36] [SPEAKER_00]: And then you're in the middle of the C and you're like, this is just going to revolutionize the way I do my practice. This is also a time where you are susceptible for buying stuff.

[00:06:44] [SPEAKER_00]: Because you're like, this is great. This is going to revolutionize my practice here.

[00:06:48] [SPEAKER_00]: And so something to consciously go into and see is understand that that headspace in the C.E. is a great thing.

[00:06:56] [SPEAKER_00]: But it's not the most realistic thing.

[00:06:58] [SPEAKER_00]: And also it's very hard to get back into that headspace that brain space after the C.E. So it's good to take notes, but I've found a lot of times I'll take intense notes that aren't very useful after the fact because I'm not in that headspace.

[00:07:14] [SPEAKER_00]: So what I'm what I've found is that I tried to take notes on big picture items.

[00:07:20] [SPEAKER_00]: I want to write down to remember big picture items instead of remembering the specific slides or anything like that. The big picture items that in the classic thing, okay so so Armin was talking a lot about digital industry and you've talking about different kinds of

[00:07:35] [SPEAKER_00]: internal scanners. There was a lot of internal scanner talk, a lot of a lot of basics of scanning basically which is really good because it's even though it's fundamental and of course I've been scanning for a long time.

[00:07:48] [SPEAKER_00]: A lot of it was a little new to me to tell you through them very excited to try some of the tips and techniques he talked about.

[00:07:54] [SPEAKER_00]: But also like I have the software that he was doing a lot of the demoing and built right into the minute architecture and I just don't use any of it. I don't.

[00:08:06] [SPEAKER_00]: I don't use it, but I'm like, wow that's really cool. I could try that. This is something I could do. You know there's a lot of digital dentistry that is an enthusiast thing where people really want to get into the printing knowledge.

[00:08:15] [SPEAKER_00]: That's great. But I think there's also stuff that I could do that doesn't involve much more than just understanding the software a little bit better.

[00:08:23] [SPEAKER_00]: So instead of the the first morning, I was pretty convinced that I was buying a new scanner right off the bat. I'm like, okay well here's the thing it's faster and easier to scan when you have a bigger scanning area ahead and so and the newer scanners have bigger.

[00:08:35] [SPEAKER_00]: So I definitely need to do this. Well maybe maybe, but that's me at continuing education events that's a classic thing where I kind of get in the zone and I decide I have to buy stuff and I have to get.

[00:08:46] [SPEAKER_00]: So today I was realizing too that like he was doing it's really funny. He was using the scanner on himself a lot. So in the previous he wanted to demonstrate a certain way that he was going to prison in case or he was going to send something to the lab where he would scan his own teeth and what's really interesting is he was getting really good scans.

[00:09:05] [SPEAKER_00]: He made it look kind of effortless and I thought, okay he's probably using one of the new scanners. So I went over and I asked Damien, he's using an I7. That's why I have.

[00:09:13] [SPEAKER_00]: So I'm thinking to myself, okay, he's getting better in what seems easier scanning data using the techniques he's been talking about on himself with the same scanner that I have.

[00:09:24] [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so it's not that I need a new scanner necessarily maybe I'll get a new scanner sometime but but the reality is is I came to understand today which is a very.

[00:09:36] [SPEAKER_00]: It's a lot less expensive because I've already got all that's one of the buying thing that I I need to start working on some of the techniques and using some of things that I have already before I do anything different because there's a lot I could be doing more with the existing software that I have.

[00:09:50] [SPEAKER_00]: So that's a really cool thing but.

[00:09:53] [SPEAKER_00]: The headspace was different today after I like it I was all into it yesterday I was like I was certain I was going to be doing everything digitally because I was all excited see does that to me and I know other people that I like it to maybe it doesn't for you and if it doesn't that's cool.

[00:10:05] [SPEAKER_00]: But this is for the person who kind of gets wrapped up during CE about like, you know, this is going to change my world.

[00:10:10] [SPEAKER_00]: So anyhow, I'm kind of excited now to to start using my scanner more effectively and using a lot of the software tools that I already have.

[00:10:21] [SPEAKER_00]: And and I've been able to kind of focus that I've been consciously trying to stay out of the why need to change this I need to change this it's you don't have to change everything you can just try something so what I've done is I only took notes on big things that are going to be a relatively easy thing to change.

[00:10:35] [SPEAKER_00]: I will say I did buy something interestingly so I have a cart for my for my scanner.

[00:10:42] [SPEAKER_00]: That's one of the carts that lots of people bought it was relatively inexpensive like 125 bucks it's like it's like a laptop cart.

[00:10:51] [SPEAKER_00]: But and it's it's kind of got a narrow base so it doesn't roll very nicely I'd say it doesn't roll very nicely and more than that the little where I set my laptop it's not very big and I have a mouse because I find using a mouse much easier than the trackpad.

[00:11:03] [SPEAKER_00]: And the mouse always falls off the did's not a big enough surface and in all this stuff and the monitor is not that big and I think to myself okay.

[00:12:16] [SPEAKER_00]: One of the reasons I don't mess around with the computer much is because honestly it's not a very nice because that stupid cart it's a little bit of a pain to use that computer and I'm like okay.

[00:12:26] [SPEAKER_00]: Well, a much less expensive fix would be and I went on to the cadre Facebook group which actually is pretty good if you are a cadre customer they've got all kind of and.

[00:12:34] [SPEAKER_00]: I saw someone who had gotten a relatively inexpensive a bigger better desk for their laptop and.

[00:12:41] [SPEAKER_00]: Actually, they have a monitor on it and a keyboard and mouse it's got a much bigger surface shooter work on plus you can also set the scanner so I went ahead and I bought that thing and then they got instead of castors they've got.

[00:12:53] [SPEAKER_00]: Like roller blade wheels which is pretty cool too and I actually got an uninterrupted power supply also for it so I can I can plug into that I don't have to worry about turning the computer off and moving blah blah blah.

[00:13:04] [SPEAKER_00]: Got a decent keyboard so so I'm upgrading my my actual station that I'm going to have the scanner on and I do think that will make it so I can like roll that in my office and use it in my office or wherever I want to know much more easily and I don't because there's honestly I was.

[00:13:18] [SPEAKER_00]: The workflow I had been using I talked about it before was I would I would remote in and I I remote it in a lot of times because that computer is sort of paying to work on because the stupid cart I have to admit that's that was I cheaped out on the cart and so it wasn't that fun and easy to use so I just so I'm going to try.

[00:13:32] [SPEAKER_00]: See if I can start using more of the the scanner features and stuff because the cart is just going to easier to access so I'm kind of excited about that but that wasn't a very expensive that you know.

[00:13:43] [SPEAKER_00]: The more expensive fix of buying a new scanner that's that's in the thousands this is a few hundred.

[00:13:48] [SPEAKER_00]: This was a little bit and honestly I figured getting out of a good CE experience like this only spending a few hundred bucks is about as good as it gets for me so that's so.

[00:13:59] [SPEAKER_00]: Remember that in the CE situations you you are more prone to buy stuff because you're looking at it.

[00:14:04] [SPEAKER_00]: This is what this is what you should be doing and of course a lot of the CE stuff they want to sell you stuff and it is.

[00:14:22] [SPEAKER_00]: I have questions the people that answer the phone are the same people that are online and the same people that you see it shows it's Damian is like who we have on the podcast.

[00:14:30] [SPEAKER_00]: They're services exceptional they know it they brag about it and they should because it's that good.

[00:14:36] [SPEAKER_00]: I feel like cadra is a really really good place to look for digital industry stuff whether it's mills or printers or scanners or all that stuff they're just they just know this stuff.

[00:14:45] [SPEAKER_00]: They use it they know it and I think they're the right person to buy from because their services top not so in any case that's that's the plug for them but.

[00:14:53] [SPEAKER_00]: When you go to CE understand that you know they're kind of they're kind of hoping you'll reach for your credit card and maybe buying at CE they love to give you the discount but you got to buy before you leave kind of then you know and that's that's a little tough particularly like.

[00:15:06] [SPEAKER_00]: The place like bio clear where you're learning techniques with the actual you know like the matrices and instruments and that you all and stuff.

[00:15:14] [SPEAKER_00]: They give you a really good deal when you buy it at the course but you know if the realities if you need a little bit of time to think about it they'd probably give you the same deal too if you talk to them so don't feel like you have to pull the trigger all the time it's okay to do it.

[00:15:26] [SPEAKER_00]: But I feel like sometimes you need to get out of that CE headspace where you're sort of manic about how great everything is it's it's a thing you know it really is a thing.

[00:15:35] [SPEAKER_00]: So you might order things sometimes expensive things that you don't exactly need and the worst is when they show up and you kind of don't remember why you bought it so just understand that that happens even when you're not.

[00:15:45] [SPEAKER_00]: Like drunk or high sometimes that happens even so I what I what I found myself as I wrote each day last two days I wrote three or four points.

[00:15:56] [SPEAKER_00]: And and you know three or three or four pearls of the day and that I wanted to review and I reviewed them in the evening and I'm going to review them when I get back in the office on Tuesday to see if they seem crazy you know when I'm actually.

[00:16:09] [SPEAKER_00]: So funny because in the weekends like this.

[00:16:11] [SPEAKER_00]: Works seems like a world away but then when you're in them in the thick of it it's a lot more realistic is like am I going to use this is it's going to be actionable for me so I try and pick three or four things maybe per day.

[00:16:24] [SPEAKER_00]: And I try to make them either actions or actionable things for instance.

[00:16:30] [SPEAKER_00]: Something really easy with the medits software that I don't ever use I mean for one thing he has a he the scan path tips are huge and I really want to try those that's great but he likes to take pictures of stuff.

[00:16:43] [SPEAKER_00]: With the the medit actually allows you to take an HD photo it's like it's kind of like an integral camera basically.

[00:16:49] [SPEAKER_00]: And so he'll take a pre-op and a post-op and a prep picture and just to just a picture in the nice thing about it is that.

[00:16:55] [SPEAKER_00]: It's stored right within their case within the the medits software which actually is also in the cloud too so the reality is.

[00:17:02] [SPEAKER_00]: If you ever wanted an insurance thing you know a pre-op pre-op picture it's super easy to snap that picture and it's right in with their case that's fantastic I hadn't.

[00:17:10] [SPEAKER_00]: I knew that took a picture I'm like yeah, but it's not that great of a picture that's not but but what's interesting it's very convenient where it's stored and so all the sudden I think I'm going to try and do pre-op.

[00:17:19] [SPEAKER_00]: Prep and post-op photos with the scanner because it's easy and it's part of their case the other thing though is like literally if you want to do in the lab has access to this stuff you could take a picture of a shade guide.

[00:17:31] [SPEAKER_00]: You could take a picture of like he showed taking a picture of a particular scan body or something like that like you can take pictures of just things that you might want to remember about the case.

[00:17:41] [SPEAKER_00]: And that becomes part of the record within minute well that's a great tip and it's easy and it's very actionable like literally I move the mouse once click it and I take this picture.

[00:17:50] [SPEAKER_00]: But I never think to do that so this is one of the pearls that I wrote down that I'll be able to look at on Tuesday. Oh yeah, I can do that that's something I can do that's not something I have to learn wildly out of you know and I have to go.

[00:18:01] [SPEAKER_00]: You know do backflips to try and do differently that's something I can do quite easily right within the software.

[00:18:06] [SPEAKER_00]: So if you can try and focus on things that are relatively easily actionable when you're back at your office in the in the grind doing this stuff right like that's that's the tough part because everything sounds great when you're you know at a CE and join your colleagues and having lunch and telling stories never good time.

[00:18:23] [SPEAKER_00]: It's not as easy when you've got you know three patient you know two hygiene checks and a patient getting numb and you're you know.

[00:18:30] [SPEAKER_00]: So remember the actionable stuff needs to be stuff that that you can do on you know on Tuesday not on not you know big picture.

[00:18:39] [SPEAKER_00]: While you're at CE and that CE brain thing it's just so so try and remember those about three pearls per day is much you're going to do you don't want to go you don't want to go back and have to overload and read pages and pages and notes to remember what you got out of the sea.

[00:18:51] [SPEAKER_00]: So that's a big deal right him down that day if possible and then the other thing that's important is review them a couple three days after you're out of the CE in other words review them when you're back in the real world and see if you see if there are things that you can you can make actionable that's a big deal because.

[00:19:08] [SPEAKER_00]: The stuff that seems like it'll be great when you're in them in the zone in the CE sometimes you're like oh that's a little little tougher than I thought or it's a harder self for the patient or GZ okay I'm going to have to make sure that.

[00:19:20] [SPEAKER_00]: The team understands why I'm doing this there's a lot of that you don't think about necessarily when you're when you're taking the CE so it's very interesting.

[00:19:27] [SPEAKER_00]: The brain space is a big thing the difference between the idealistic part of when you're taking the CE versus okay when you're on the ground is this something you can do.

[00:19:36] [SPEAKER_00]: I will I hope to tell you more about what I'm learning about the software and how much what's useful to me.

[00:19:42] [SPEAKER_00]: I got to tell you that that.

[00:19:45] [SPEAKER_00]: Some of the tips about removable digital removal is exciting to me I've really struggled to get.

[00:19:55] [SPEAKER_00]: Get.

[00:19:56] [SPEAKER_00]: I've gotten frustrated one of the things when you get frustrated after all you just say I'm it's not working and I want to do that and I just ditch it and I'll take an impression or whatever you know the funny is first off okay I understand that.

[00:20:07] [SPEAKER_00]: I think I have some tips that I might not get so frustrated with for one for the other thing okay go ahead and take an impression but the scanning impressions is way easier than I thought I didn't realize and super accurate like shockingly accurate.

[00:20:21] [SPEAKER_00]: So these are a couple things I didn't realize so I have in my mind and this is one of the tips I wrote down I have a denture patient that I we just got him into like a provisional kind of temporary denture after.

[00:20:31] [SPEAKER_00]: And I think I can do better with this so I'm thinking what I might do is impression conventionally in scan that.

[00:20:44] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm not a conventional impression because the acudent system that two-alginate acudent system gives a really nice impression I'm thinking myself okay well let's try and do this digitally will take the impression convention but trying to digitally with one of the labs that was at.

[00:20:58] [SPEAKER_00]: And that the better society because I know that they work with armen which means they work with men at they know all this and he'll hold my hand through it you know so it's it's just kind of exciting.

[00:21:07] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm focusing hard this weekend on stuff that is going to be realistic for me to do back at the office not things that I'll get really excited about by the junk and then and then think months later why did I buy all this stuff I'm not going to do this you know it's it's hard.

[00:21:22] [SPEAKER_00]: And then there are probably people who are really good at implementing stuff and going yes I can change my entire practice I'm not good at that stuff the implementation is hard for me and and.

[00:21:32] [SPEAKER_00]: I you know I don't think anyone is trying to sell something so you won't implement it but I also know that a lot of those a lot of the see is not their business whether or not you implement it's that they show you how to do it and you got to do it.

[00:21:43] [SPEAKER_00]: So you need to know what's realistic for you some people might be really excellent at that and that this this is probably not a this is probably not suggestion for them but for me like me that it have a little harder time implementing make sure you try and.

[00:21:57] [SPEAKER_00]: Don't decide you're going to change your whole practice grab a few things that that are realistic to change and you know what if you're able to make those changes.

[00:22:05] [SPEAKER_00]: Easily too easily will then maybe you know take the course again dig back in and say okay what else could I do but don't.

[00:22:11] [SPEAKER_00]: Make realistic goals instead of I'm going to change everything about my practice because like I said sometimes you get in that sea space and you're like this is the way it needs to be done it's great that's that's one of the best parts to see when it's exciting and fun like that but.

[00:22:24] [SPEAKER_00]: Just try and remember realistic implementation strategies and and review you know try and review the things you have written down.

[00:22:33] [SPEAKER_00]: The pearls that you would take away with while you're in the thick of it remember is how is this going to work when I'm actually in the grind versus.

[00:22:41] [SPEAKER_00]: When I'm you know sitting on the beach after a sipping my ties after the course and how I'm going to change everything.

[00:22:46] [SPEAKER_00]: Two very different head spaces that you in one of them is where you have where the rubber meets the road and I think that's important so I appreciate you guys listening to the show.
