Al riffs on a stressful patient problem/story that occupied his brain for an entire day and how quickly it was forgotten for the next drama.
It's worth remembering that the drama that's occupying your mind right now is something you probably won't even remember in a week.
And that's a good thing.

[00:00:51] [SPEAKER_02]: in a way that's never been done before, I give you the Alan Mead Experience.
[00:00:57] [SPEAKER_02]: Music
[00:00:59] [SPEAKER_01]: Well hello and welcome to another episode of the Alan Mead Experience.
[00:01:04] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm your host, Dr. Alan Mead.
[00:01:06] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm a dentist, a podcaster, and I'm celebrating my 22nd consecutive sober October.
[00:01:14] [SPEAKER_01]: Also known as every other month for me.
[00:01:17] [SPEAKER_01]: But I've heard a lot about sober October lately.
[00:01:20] [SPEAKER_01]: And I'm like, yeah, that's kind of how all October's are for me now.
[00:01:23] [SPEAKER_01]: So there you have it.
[00:01:24] [SPEAKER_01]: I have an interesting story to tell you.
[00:01:27] [SPEAKER_01]: I feel like I'm telling these stories a lot.
[00:01:32] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't, I don't know.
[00:01:35] [SPEAKER_01]: Maybe I'm overly honest about this stuff or maybe I'm, maybe I have crazy stuff that just, it's just drawn to me.
[00:01:42] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
[00:01:43] [SPEAKER_01]: But I feel like, I feel like I'm constantly telling these weird stories that I, that I get myself into.
[00:01:51] [SPEAKER_01]: But there is a moral at the end of this sordid tale that I think is very helpful.
[00:01:58] [SPEAKER_01]: It's very helpful for me.
[00:02:00] [SPEAKER_01]: Oftentimes, I only think of it after the fact when I've, when I've had one of these ridiculous things happen to me.
[00:02:08] [SPEAKER_01]: But like if I can remember the moral of this story in the middle of whatever crisis I'm going through, it's very helpful.
[00:02:15] [SPEAKER_01]: So I'll talk about that at the end of it.
[00:02:17] [SPEAKER_01]: So I get to work last week, Tuesday, first thing in the morning.
[00:02:22] [SPEAKER_01]: I use Podium for messaging.
[00:02:25] [SPEAKER_01]: Unfortunately we also have, I think we have demand forced too.
[00:02:28] [SPEAKER_01]: It's whatever's built into Dentrix.
[00:02:30] [SPEAKER_01]: So we have multiple portals for people to message us, which actually is terrible.
[00:02:36] [SPEAKER_01]: I need to do something about that.
[00:02:37] [SPEAKER_01]: But the reality is this people who come through the website will use Podium.
[00:02:41] [SPEAKER_01]: And I like Podium.
[00:02:42] [SPEAKER_01]: I like Podium has a really good, Podium is excellent for getting people to know what's going on.
[00:02:46] [SPEAKER_01]: It's really good for people to leave Google reviews.
[00:02:48] [SPEAKER_01]: It's also the user interface for the texting back and forth with patients is excellent.
[00:02:54] [SPEAKER_01]: It's HIPAA compliant, but it's also, it's got a great app for your phone.
[00:02:59] [SPEAKER_01]: It's really nice in the browser.
[00:03:01] [SPEAKER_01]: So I really actually like the back and forth on Podium probably better than other, the other stuff that we've used in any case.
[00:03:07] [SPEAKER_01]: I have to admit, I don't look for Podium.
[00:03:11] [SPEAKER_01]: What I really look for my answering machine message at the office has my, it has a Google voice number.
[00:03:21] [SPEAKER_01]: Man, this is convoluted now.
[00:03:23] [SPEAKER_01]: I think of it as a Google voice number and the Google voice number then goes directly to my phone.
[00:03:28] [SPEAKER_01]: It leaves a message on my phone.
[00:03:30] [SPEAKER_01]: And so then I can get it, but it doesn't, it doesn't go.
[00:03:32] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't give out my cell phone number per se.
[00:03:35] [SPEAKER_01]: I use the Google voice number as sort of a, it's just another layer in case it's someone,
[00:03:42] [SPEAKER_01]: because I have to tell you a good portion of the calls I get on the weekend are people who are not patients of record.
[00:03:50] [SPEAKER_01]: And I have to tell you, maybe I'm a horrible guy, but I do not feel obliged to call people who are not patients of record back on the weekend.
[00:03:57] [SPEAKER_01]: I just, I just feel like my weekends are, I got better things to do than worry about emergency patients who are not my patients.
[00:04:05] [SPEAKER_01]: And you know what? Maybe I'm a terrible person for that, but I suspect, I suspect you all are feeling me on this one anyhow.
[00:04:11] [SPEAKER_01]: So I get, Google voice shows up in my phone.
[00:04:15] [SPEAKER_01]: I get the message and then I can call them back.
[00:04:19] [SPEAKER_01]: Now, typically for a patient that I know it's a patient of record is having troubles.
[00:04:22] [SPEAKER_01]: I will give them, I'll call them back on my cell phone and then they also have my, my cell phone number that they can text me back and forth on.
[00:04:28] [SPEAKER_01]: So it's sort of, it's a, it's sort of a gatekeeping way of letting patients have my, my cell phone number.
[00:04:34] [SPEAKER_01]: And most of the time they don't really, they don't really abuse it, but this podium actually has an app that you can use on your phone too.
[00:04:41] [SPEAKER_01]: So that's pretty handy as well to be perfectly honest, pretty handy.
[00:04:46] [SPEAKER_01]: I probably need to look into seeing if I can make the podium number my emergency number in any case.
[00:04:51] [SPEAKER_01]: I hadn't checked the podium last Tuesday.
[00:04:54] [SPEAKER_01]: So I got into work and all, I'm looking in and seeing this patient going, do you answer this number?
[00:04:59] [SPEAKER_01]: Do you ever go over this?
[00:05:00] [SPEAKER_01]: So she had not gotten the Google voice number on my answering machine.
[00:05:04] [SPEAKER_01]: She must have gone directly to the website and used podium.
[00:05:07] [SPEAKER_01]: So I'm feeling pretty bad.
[00:05:08] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm looking at these, I'm looking at these podium messages that she had left and frankly it was like over the weekend.
[00:05:12] [SPEAKER_01]: And she ended up in the hospital.
[00:05:16] [SPEAKER_01]: Unbelievable.
[00:05:17] [SPEAKER_01]: It was like, oh my gosh.
[00:05:18] [SPEAKER_01]: So this is, you can kind of, you can kind of see what this is going.
[00:05:20] [SPEAKER_01]: So let me, let me just read the very first message I got back from.
[00:05:25] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. She tried to go, okay.
[00:05:26] [SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, here it is right here.
[00:05:31] [SPEAKER_01]: This was, this was Monday.
[00:05:32] [SPEAKER_01]: So she, she, she, yeah.
[00:05:37] [SPEAKER_01]: So it was, it was the day before, the day before I went into work Tuesday last week.
[00:05:45] [SPEAKER_01]: It was admitted to the hospital on Friday for an infection on the floor of my mouth.
[00:05:49] [SPEAKER_01]: I really want Dr. Mead to take a look.
[00:05:51] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm terrified.
[00:05:52] [SPEAKER_01]: They wanted to transfer me to Detroit.
[00:05:54] [SPEAKER_01]: I already don't trust this hospital.
[00:05:56] [SPEAKER_01]: I can make whatever time work as long as I'm back by 4pm.
[00:06:00] [SPEAKER_01]: So the story is she texted me on this podium on the Monday after she had gone to the hospital for,
[00:06:05] [SPEAKER_01]: and the diagnosis was an infection in the floor of the mouth.
[00:06:09] [SPEAKER_01]: And I'm thinking to myself, okay, floor of the mouth.
[00:06:14] [SPEAKER_01]: That's not great.
[00:06:15] [SPEAKER_01]: I immediately go back to oral pathology and the picture of the dude whose whole head is swollen up from Ludwig's angina
[00:06:21] [SPEAKER_01]: and how it's almost always by a tooth, an infected tooth.
[00:06:26] [SPEAKER_01]: And you're like, oh God.
[00:06:27] [SPEAKER_01]: So she sends even later the same time she says, please have Dr. Mead review.
[00:06:32] [SPEAKER_01]: And she got like a path report from the hospital, which is very intimidating to read particularly for a patient.
[00:06:39] [SPEAKER_01]: And it says a lot of stuff but doesn't actually give a diagnosis of where this infection came from.
[00:06:47] [SPEAKER_01]: But she even ended up, she took pictures and she did.
[00:06:50] [SPEAKER_01]: She had like a swelling in her neck.
[00:06:51] [SPEAKER_01]: It was really scary.
[00:06:53] [SPEAKER_01]: So she had like this floor of the mouth is all swollen up on the left side.
[00:06:57] [SPEAKER_01]: And guess what?
[00:06:58] [SPEAKER_01]: So immediately, where you before I'm a little quiz.
[00:07:02] [SPEAKER_01]: You're a dentist.
[00:07:03] [SPEAKER_01]: Left side floor of the mouth is swollen up.
[00:07:05] [SPEAKER_01]: She goes to the hospital for it.
[00:07:07] [SPEAKER_01]: What are you thinking?
[00:07:09] [SPEAKER_01]: What are you thinking?
[00:07:11] [SPEAKER_01]: I know what I was thinking.
[00:07:12] [SPEAKER_01]: I was thinking I did a root canal last year on number 19 and it it's been fine since then.
[00:07:20] [SPEAKER_01]: But hey now she's got an infection in the floor of her mouth.
[00:07:24] [SPEAKER_01]: So immediately because I have low self-esteem and I have an incredible capacity to jump to the worst possible situation.
[00:07:35] [SPEAKER_01]: Whatever the worst outcome could be, that's exactly where my brain goes.
[00:07:39] [SPEAKER_01]: So I'm thinking okay I've got a tooth that I did a root canal on last year that reinfected.
[00:07:44] [SPEAKER_01]: And it's not my fault but I still felt really horrible.
[00:07:46] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm like oh yeah.
[00:07:47] [SPEAKER_01]: So I ended up calling her back and texting her back and all this stuff.
[00:07:50] [SPEAKER_01]: And we got her in, took a look.
[00:07:53] [SPEAKER_01]: Took a pan out, took all this stuff.
[00:07:55] [SPEAKER_01]: I'll tell you that.
[00:07:56] [SPEAKER_01]: I was worried that it was in my mind as dumb as it is like oh this is something I did a bad job on this root canal and it's reinfected and I caused all this trouble for first off.
[00:08:06] [SPEAKER_01]: I didn't cause any of it.
[00:08:07] [SPEAKER_01]: You know the root canal had not hurt up to this point.
[00:08:11] [SPEAKER_01]: She hadn't had any trouble.
[00:08:12] [SPEAKER_01]: She had not indicated anything.
[00:08:13] [SPEAKER_01]: Everything was fine.
[00:08:14] [SPEAKER_01]: It's been like been a year.
[00:08:15] [SPEAKER_01]: It was last year at this time that we did it.
[00:08:17] [SPEAKER_01]: So that was interesting.
[00:08:19] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I don't know that there's any particular.
[00:08:23] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if there's any particular time that a tooth can reinfect but lo and behold.
[00:08:27] [SPEAKER_01]: So I wanted to see her immediately.
[00:08:28] [SPEAKER_01]: We got her in just as soon as she could get in on Tuesday.
[00:08:30] [SPEAKER_01]: And I did an exam and the first thing I noticed was, well I'll tell you this.
[00:08:34] [SPEAKER_01]: I took a look.
[00:08:36] [SPEAKER_01]: We took x-rays.
[00:08:37] [SPEAKER_01]: We took a pano.
[00:08:37] [SPEAKER_01]: We took a PA.
[00:08:40] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't have a CBCT and that would have been very valuable to be perfectly honest.
[00:08:44] [SPEAKER_01]: But she was still a little swollen in the floor of her mouth and she was sore in the floor of her mouth
[00:08:49] [SPEAKER_01]: like when I palpated the soil.
[00:08:50] [SPEAKER_01]: That was the sensitive spot.
[00:08:52] [SPEAKER_01]: What wasn't sensitive was percussion on any of those lower left teeth
[00:08:55] [SPEAKER_01]: including number 19 that I had done the root canal on.
[00:08:59] [SPEAKER_01]: So no palpation sensitivity, buccal or lingual.
[00:09:02] [SPEAKER_01]: No percussion sensitivity, no cold sensitivity, no draining fish on either side.
[00:09:06] [SPEAKER_01]: Nothing.
[00:09:07] [SPEAKER_01]: And no, there was good healing on the PA.
[00:09:11] [SPEAKER_01]: You could see bone had healed back in.
[00:09:13] [SPEAKER_01]: So it didn't look like it was the tooth that had reinfected
[00:09:17] [SPEAKER_01]: and none of the other teeth looked like they were infected.
[00:09:20] [SPEAKER_01]: Again, I don't have a 3D x-ray so I can't...
[00:09:23] [SPEAKER_01]: That may have shown something different but for the life of me,
[00:09:26] [SPEAKER_01]: I couldn't figure out what's going on.
[00:09:28] [SPEAKER_01]: When I think of an infection in the floor of the mouth,
[00:09:32] [SPEAKER_01]: I think a tooth, right?
[00:09:35] [SPEAKER_01]: You think that's where they come from usually.
[00:09:38] [SPEAKER_01]: It just seems weird.
[00:09:39] [SPEAKER_01]: But there wasn't any indication that it was a tooth.
[00:09:43] [SPEAKER_01]: So immediately I felt better.
[00:09:45] [SPEAKER_01]: Immediately I was feeling less guilty about whatever treatment
[00:09:49] [SPEAKER_01]: that I might have given that was causing her troubles.
[00:09:55] [SPEAKER_01]: So she had later that day an appointment with an ENT.
[00:10:00] [SPEAKER_01]: So I'm like, okay, go to an ENT and we'll bring some.
[00:10:03] [SPEAKER_01]: And then she had an appointment with her doctor,
[00:10:06] [SPEAKER_01]: her family doctor the next day.
[00:10:09] [SPEAKER_01]: So in the ER had put her on,
[00:10:12] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know what they'd put her on.
[00:10:14] [SPEAKER_01]: I think it was augmentin.
[00:10:17] [SPEAKER_01]: I can't remember exactly.
[00:10:19] [SPEAKER_01]: Either she was on something and we...
[00:10:20] [SPEAKER_01]: She might have been on a Moxicillin and we might have bumped her up to augmentin.
[00:10:24] [SPEAKER_01]: I can't remember exactly but I mean she was on something
[00:10:26] [SPEAKER_01]: that would be good for an odontogenic infection
[00:10:28] [SPEAKER_01]: but here's the thing if it's not an odontogenic infection,
[00:10:30] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know what would be good for her.
[00:10:32] [SPEAKER_01]: She went to the ENT.
[00:10:33] [SPEAKER_01]: I've literally... This was like all last week's soap opera.
[00:10:38] [SPEAKER_01]: I feel so bad for the woman because it's...
[00:10:40] [SPEAKER_01]: Went to the ENT.
[00:10:41] [SPEAKER_01]: The ENT says, yeah, sometimes you just get infections in the floor of your mouth
[00:10:44] [SPEAKER_01]: and that was as good as they got.
[00:10:47] [SPEAKER_01]: They took a CT at the emergency room
[00:10:52] [SPEAKER_01]: and the ER doc and her family doc got to see it
[00:10:57] [SPEAKER_01]: and they had nothing.
[00:11:00] [SPEAKER_01]: There's no tooth pain.
[00:11:02] [SPEAKER_01]: There's no... It's just a hot mess.
[00:11:07] [SPEAKER_01]: They don't have as is often the case in medicine.
[00:11:12] [SPEAKER_01]: They handle the situation acutely which they got to do.
[00:11:16] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean everything was pointing towards infection
[00:11:18] [SPEAKER_01]: although one thing I didn't ask her,
[00:11:20] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if she had a fever or not
[00:11:22] [SPEAKER_01]: but I mean her neck was all swollen up.
[00:11:23] [SPEAKER_01]: There was something crazy going on there.
[00:11:26] [SPEAKER_01]: And so they had no...
[00:11:29] [SPEAKER_01]: They ruled out Ludwig's angina at this ENT.
[00:11:32] [SPEAKER_01]: As she said, yep, he read the CT.
[00:11:35] [SPEAKER_01]: He saw me, ruled out Ludwig's angina and called it a day.
[00:11:39] [SPEAKER_01]: Family doctor's office said the diagnosis from the hospital is oral abscess
[00:11:43] [SPEAKER_01]: and that's the first time I've heard that.
[00:11:45] [SPEAKER_01]: But oral abscess, she said no one ever said it was anything with a tooth.
[00:11:49] [SPEAKER_01]: It's just an infection in the floor of the mouth
[00:11:50] [SPEAKER_01]: so they gave her no diagnosis
[00:11:53] [SPEAKER_01]: which is very frustrating to her, to me, to everyone.
[00:11:58] [SPEAKER_01]: They gave her an antibiotic
[00:11:59] [SPEAKER_01]: and like I said, I ruled out the teeth as best I could
[00:12:03] [SPEAKER_01]: and that's where it was left.
[00:12:05] [SPEAKER_01]: But here's the thing.
[00:12:07] [SPEAKER_01]: I tell this story several days after it happening
[00:12:10] [SPEAKER_01]: and I already know what the answer is
[00:12:12] [SPEAKER_01]: or at least I know that I feel better about it
[00:12:15] [SPEAKER_01]: and I've done what I can for her.
[00:12:16] [SPEAKER_01]: So that feels better.
[00:12:18] [SPEAKER_01]: During the situation, I felt like the gum on the bottom of someone's shoe.
[00:12:22] [SPEAKER_01]: I felt awful.
[00:12:23] [SPEAKER_01]: I felt like I had done something wrong
[00:12:25] [SPEAKER_01]: and of course I did the best that I could with it.
[00:12:29] [SPEAKER_01]: In retrospect, I realize this but you're like,
[00:12:32] [SPEAKER_01]: a patient goes to the hospital
[00:12:34] [SPEAKER_01]: and you're thinking it's the tooth that you worked on.
[00:12:36] [SPEAKER_01]: It's just the freaking worst.
[00:12:39] [SPEAKER_01]: And so that day was pretty stressful and rotten
[00:12:42] [SPEAKER_01]: because I'm thinking of all that.
[00:12:44] [SPEAKER_01]: Even when I saw the patient and she wasn't mad
[00:12:46] [SPEAKER_01]: and we were kind of working through it and all that stuff.
[00:12:48] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it happens a lot with me.
[00:12:51] [SPEAKER_01]: A lot of times I get a patient that's in trouble
[00:12:53] [SPEAKER_01]: and I'm happy to help them but it still feels bad.
[00:12:56] [SPEAKER_01]: Like somehow or another it was the treatment that I gave them
[00:12:58] [SPEAKER_01]: that the treatment that I did on them that caused the problem
[00:13:01] [SPEAKER_01]: and honestly maybe sometimes that happens
[00:13:03] [SPEAKER_01]: but there are complications with all kinds of treatment
[00:13:07] [SPEAKER_01]: and even if it was the tooth that I worked on
[00:13:10] [SPEAKER_01]: that caused the floor of the mouth to swell up
[00:13:12] [SPEAKER_01]: that's a complication that A, you can't necessarily predict
[00:13:17] [SPEAKER_01]: and I shouldn't feel too awful bad about
[00:13:19] [SPEAKER_01]: because I didn't do anything that I wouldn't have done
[00:13:21] [SPEAKER_01]: in any other situation.
[00:13:22] [SPEAKER_01]: Actually it looked pretty good.
[00:13:24] [SPEAKER_01]: She wasn't even having tooth problems
[00:13:25] [SPEAKER_01]: so the reality is probably not the treatment that I rendered
[00:13:28] [SPEAKER_01]: but I always have this tendency to feel like it was my fault.
[00:13:33] [SPEAKER_01]: Like I want to make everything my fault.
[00:13:36] [SPEAKER_01]: It's a real problem I have
[00:13:38] [SPEAKER_01]: and have always had as a dentist.
[00:13:42] [SPEAKER_01]: It's not a healthy way to look at things
[00:13:46] [SPEAKER_01]: but it also will make for a bad day or two or three
[00:13:50] [SPEAKER_01]: because that's just kind of how it is.
[00:13:53] [SPEAKER_01]: But what's really funny, knowing that I had this really bad Tuesday
[00:13:57] [SPEAKER_01]: when I'm trying to help this patient out
[00:13:58] [SPEAKER_01]: and trying to figure out what the heck's wrong
[00:14:00] [SPEAKER_01]: and if it was the tooth that I worked on
[00:14:02] [SPEAKER_01]: and all that stuff.
[00:14:04] [SPEAKER_01]: Three, four days later if you'd ask me
[00:14:07] [SPEAKER_01]: so what was it that was bugging you last week?
[00:14:10] [SPEAKER_01]: What was the thing that was weighing on your mind
[00:14:14] [SPEAKER_01]: the most last week?
[00:14:16] [SPEAKER_01]: And you know what?
[00:14:17] [SPEAKER_01]: Short of me looking at a journal I might have written
[00:14:19] [SPEAKER_01]: and I don't write a lot of those to tell you the truth
[00:14:22] [SPEAKER_01]: I almost never can remember what the actual thing
[00:14:26] [SPEAKER_01]: that was hanging me up a week ago was.
[00:14:29] [SPEAKER_01]: I remember Tuesday specifically
[00:14:31] [SPEAKER_01]: because I literally have it written down
[00:14:33] [SPEAKER_01]: but the reality is in two weeks
[00:14:36] [SPEAKER_01]: I won't remember that this happened on that Tuesday
[00:14:39] [SPEAKER_01]: and I won't remember the drama that it threw
[00:14:42] [SPEAKER_01]: through me all day that day.
[00:14:44] [SPEAKER_01]: And so the thing that I need to remember
[00:14:47] [SPEAKER_01]: is that I've made it through every one of these
[00:14:50] [SPEAKER_01]: like things that felt like a really horrible
[00:14:53] [SPEAKER_01]: end to my career and horrible thing
[00:14:55] [SPEAKER_01]: I made it through every one of them
[00:14:57] [SPEAKER_01]: and frankly I can barely remember them at this point
[00:15:00] [SPEAKER_01]: so even though when it's all happening to me
[00:15:02] [SPEAKER_01]: and it's right in front of me
[00:15:05] [SPEAKER_01]: and it seems just as big as the Grand Canyon
[00:15:08] [SPEAKER_01]: and scary and awful
[00:15:10] [SPEAKER_01]: literally within days I don't even remember it.
[00:15:13] [SPEAKER_01]: So I need to remember that while it's happening
[00:15:17] [SPEAKER_01]: I need to remember that this big dramatic thing
[00:15:20] [SPEAKER_01]: that's happening to me
[00:15:21] [SPEAKER_01]: is something I won't even remember in a few days
[00:15:24] [SPEAKER_01]: that it happened that's how quickly
[00:15:27] [SPEAKER_01]: these things fade into the background
[00:15:29] [SPEAKER_01]: Now honestly if you get hit by a car
[00:15:35] [SPEAKER_01]: or you have a divorce or something big like that
[00:15:37] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah okay so fair enough you can say that
[00:15:40] [SPEAKER_01]: but the reality is a lot of the small stuff
[00:15:43] [SPEAKER_01]: and even some of the bigger stuff
[00:15:44] [SPEAKER_01]: is just not that big after a few days
[00:15:47] [SPEAKER_01]: time heals all wounds on some level
[00:15:49] [SPEAKER_01]: and so part of it is just like
[00:15:52] [SPEAKER_01]: just got to remember when the bad stuff is happening
[00:15:54] [SPEAKER_01]: that it's not even going to be that bad
[00:15:56] [SPEAKER_01]: even in a couple days
[00:15:57] [SPEAKER_01]: so what that might help me with
[00:16:01] [SPEAKER_01]: in what I struggle with is
[00:16:03] [SPEAKER_01]: having a better reaction to things
[00:16:05] [SPEAKER_01]: because it's all about having a better reaction
[00:16:07] [SPEAKER_01]: it's always about having a better reaction
[00:16:09] [SPEAKER_01]: like that's if I can just take a couple beats
[00:16:13] [SPEAKER_01]: and react better
[00:16:15] [SPEAKER_01]: everything turns out better
[00:16:16] [SPEAKER_01]: and mind you most of the drama that was going on
[00:16:19] [SPEAKER_01]: with this particular patient interaction
[00:16:21] [SPEAKER_01]: was in my brain and in my heart
[00:16:24] [SPEAKER_01]: you know it was not I wasn't flipping out
[00:16:25] [SPEAKER_01]: or throwing things or kicking dogs or anything like that
[00:16:28] [SPEAKER_01]: it was just having a really bad day
[00:16:29] [SPEAKER_01]: I was having a really emotionally personally
[00:16:31] [SPEAKER_01]: I was having a rough day and feeling really bad
[00:16:34] [SPEAKER_01]: and if I had had a little perspective of like
[00:16:37] [SPEAKER_01]: you know what these things happen
[00:16:39] [SPEAKER_01]: and in a couple days you won't even remember
[00:16:41] [SPEAKER_01]: what was bugging you
[00:16:42] [SPEAKER_01]: so you'll get past this and it won't be that big of a deal
[00:16:44] [SPEAKER_01]: and the funny thing is when you ask a friend
[00:16:46] [SPEAKER_01]: for perspective they're able to bring that to you
[00:16:49] [SPEAKER_01]: and doesn't feel like that's the case
[00:16:50] [SPEAKER_01]: does not feel like this is not going to be
[00:16:53] [SPEAKER_01]: that big of a deal in a couple days it never does
[00:16:54] [SPEAKER_01]: even though it always is doesn't feel like that
[00:16:57] [SPEAKER_01]: so that's the moral of my story
[00:17:00] [SPEAKER_01]: the moral of my story is no matter what drama
[00:17:03] [SPEAKER_01]: is going on in your particular time
[00:17:04] [SPEAKER_01]: it's very likely that in a few days
[00:17:07] [SPEAKER_01]: or a couple weeks you won't even remember
[00:17:09] [SPEAKER_01]: what it was but what was bugging you
[00:17:10] [SPEAKER_01]: like it literally it will be that small
[00:17:13] [SPEAKER_01]: of a thing like your memory will start
[00:17:15] [SPEAKER_01]: to fade out and doesn't take very long
[00:17:16] [SPEAKER_01]: it's kind of amazing and that's a really good
[00:17:19] [SPEAKER_01]: thing to be honest because if we were hanging
[00:17:20] [SPEAKER_01]: on to every every dumb thing like this
[00:17:23] [SPEAKER_01]: you know for a long period of time
[00:17:25] [SPEAKER_01]: we'd be a mess we'd never get anything done
[00:17:27] [SPEAKER_01]: so the reality is
[00:17:29] [SPEAKER_01]: I know today
[00:17:31] [SPEAKER_01]: that the things that seem really big
[00:17:34] [SPEAKER_01]: in front of me like scary and
[00:17:37] [SPEAKER_01]: really wrecking my day
[00:17:38] [SPEAKER_01]: I know that those eventually
[00:17:40] [SPEAKER_01]: and pretty quickly fade in the background
[00:17:43] [SPEAKER_01]: now what the trick is is to
[00:17:45] [SPEAKER_01]: to know that and understand that
[00:17:47] [SPEAKER_01]: when it's still in front of you and scary
[00:17:49] [SPEAKER_01]: and I don't know exactly what the best way
[00:17:51] [SPEAKER_01]: to execute on that is but
[00:17:53] [SPEAKER_01]: you know what writing something down
[00:17:54] [SPEAKER_01]: or having a little sticky note or something like that
[00:17:57] [SPEAKER_01]: that reminds you that might be helpful
[00:17:58] [SPEAKER_01]: might be that deep breath that you need
[00:18:01] [SPEAKER_01]: I know that I talk about this a lot
[00:18:03] [SPEAKER_01]: and the Alameda experience I have a lot of
[00:18:05] [SPEAKER_01]: these dumb little things that really you know
[00:18:06] [SPEAKER_01]: days that are wrecked that turned out okay
[00:18:10] [SPEAKER_01]: because that's how they all end up
[00:18:12] [SPEAKER_01]: everything I got hit by a truck four years ago
[00:18:15] [SPEAKER_01]: and guess what turned out okay
[00:18:17] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't even remember it like
[00:18:18] [SPEAKER_01]: like you know I chuckle about it
[00:18:20] [SPEAKER_01]: it's like not even a thing so
[00:18:22] [SPEAKER_01]: there's a lot of stuff that
[00:18:23] [SPEAKER_01]: you can kind of get past and forget
[00:18:26] [SPEAKER_01]: and the stuff that's really big in your
[00:18:29] [SPEAKER_01]: right in front of you
[00:18:30] [SPEAKER_01]: eventually will be behind you
[00:18:32] [SPEAKER_01]: will be faded away you won't even remember it
[00:18:33] [SPEAKER_01]: and it's worth remembering that that happens
[00:18:35] [SPEAKER_01]: relatively quickly in our little human lives here
[00:18:37] [SPEAKER_01]: so I'm grateful for that to be honest
[00:18:40] [SPEAKER_01]: it's definitely better to not have to
[00:18:42] [SPEAKER_01]: you know walk around in a completely
[00:18:43] [SPEAKER_01]: stressed out state about all this stuff
[00:18:46] [SPEAKER_01]: and also I can kind of recommend
[00:18:48] [SPEAKER_01]: podium for that
[00:18:49] [SPEAKER_01]: podium was pretty good and having an emergency number
[00:18:52] [SPEAKER_01]: for patients to get
[00:18:53] [SPEAKER_01]: having a few layers between that number and you
[00:18:55] [SPEAKER_01]: is good I would say but also taking care
[00:18:58] [SPEAKER_01]: of your patients that way
[00:19:00] [SPEAKER_01]: there's a lot of things that patients
[00:19:01] [SPEAKER_01]: will remember about you but I'm going to tell you
[00:19:04] [SPEAKER_01]: if you help them on a weekend
[00:19:05] [SPEAKER_01]: even if it was just a phone call and tell them
[00:19:07] [SPEAKER_01]: that everything's gonna be okay or we'll see you
[00:19:09] [SPEAKER_01]: and we'll see you on next day or whatever
[00:19:12] [SPEAKER_01]: they remember that for years
[00:19:13] [SPEAKER_01]: I have patients that will come in and the only
[00:19:15] [SPEAKER_01]: thing they remember about me is that I called
[00:19:17] [SPEAKER_01]: them on the weekend to make sure they were okay
[00:19:19] [SPEAKER_01]: that's a huge thing
[00:19:20] [SPEAKER_01]: it's a huge thing and there's a lot of
[00:19:22] [SPEAKER_01]: whatever doctor has ever done that for you
[00:19:25] [SPEAKER_01]: no one but we do that because
[00:19:27] [SPEAKER_01]: that's what toothaches are, that's how we handle
[00:19:29] [SPEAKER_01]: toothaches so just worth remembering
[00:19:30] [SPEAKER_01]: and worth remembering that the big things in front
[00:19:32] [SPEAKER_01]: of you, the big scary things fade away into
[00:19:34] [SPEAKER_01]: things you don't even remember pretty quick
[00:19:37] [SPEAKER_01]: so I hope this was helpful for you
[00:19:39] [SPEAKER_01]: I hope I can remember and have it be helpful
[00:19:41] [SPEAKER_01]: for me too
[00:19:42] [SPEAKER_01]: I sure appreciate you guys listening to the show
[00:19:44] [SPEAKER_01]: and to the network, we got a lot of good stuff
[00:19:46] [SPEAKER_01]: coming up, I would love it if you would
[00:19:48] [SPEAKER_01]: tell a friend, tell someone
[00:19:50] [SPEAKER_01]: think of someone from your dental school class
[00:19:52] [SPEAKER_01]: or a dental colleague that you talk to
[00:19:54] [SPEAKER_01]: somewhat regularly
[00:19:56] [SPEAKER_01]: who doesn't listen to the podcast or you think
[00:19:58] [SPEAKER_01]: maybe doesn't listen to any podcast or something like that
[00:20:00] [SPEAKER_01]: and tell them, bug them, tell them that you're not
[00:20:02] [SPEAKER_01]: going to stop bugging them until they try the very
[00:20:04] [SPEAKER_01]: dental podcast network, they're going to find
[00:20:06] [SPEAKER_01]: something that they like because we have a lot of different stuff
[00:20:08] [SPEAKER_01]: on the network and also honestly
[00:20:10] [SPEAKER_01]: if there's a show that you think we should
[00:20:12] [SPEAKER_01]: have that we don't have
[00:20:14] [SPEAKER_01]: whether it's just an episode of one of our shows
[00:20:16] [SPEAKER_01]: or a whole new brand new show, I want to know
[00:20:18] [SPEAKER_01]: about it so you can message me on Facebook
[00:20:21] [SPEAKER_01]: Alan Mead
[00:20:22] [SPEAKER_01]: my email, the best email is simplebutnoteasy
[00:20:25] [SPEAKER_01]: at gmail.com
[00:20:28] [SPEAKER_01]: simplebutnoteasyatgmail.com
[00:20:29] [SPEAKER_01]: and you can join
[00:20:30] [SPEAKER_01]: the Facebook group, go to Facebook and look for very
[00:20:32] [SPEAKER_01]: dental and then it's going to ask you for a password
[00:20:34] [SPEAKER_01]: one of five will get you in
[00:20:36] [SPEAKER_01]: the five passwords are Timmerman, Hornbrook, Lipscomb,
[00:20:40] [SPEAKER_01]: McQuethy
[00:20:40] [SPEAKER_01]: and Papa Randy, any of those will get you
[00:20:43] [SPEAKER_01]: in to the very dental
[00:20:45] [SPEAKER_01]: Facebook group and I have to tell you I have been
[00:20:47] [SPEAKER_01]: really severe about letting no one
[00:20:49] [SPEAKER_01]: in unless they have the password so
[00:20:50] [SPEAKER_01]: if you are a listener
[00:20:53] [SPEAKER_01]: and you haven't put a password in there
[00:20:55] [SPEAKER_01]: and I've turned you down, guess what
[00:20:56] [SPEAKER_01]: you need to password so that's, grab one of
[00:20:58] [SPEAKER_01]: those passwords we'll get you in there
[00:21:00] [SPEAKER_01]: we can talk about stuff and thank you a ton
[00:21:02] [SPEAKER_01]: for listening and we'll catch you next time
