Reusable Tips: Smoother Digital Workflow Using Splashtop

[00:00:22] here's how the series came about. I was on someone else's podcast, a guy by the name of Michael Arias. He has a podcast on dental marketing. It's called The Dental Marketer, and he has a Monday morning segment. He calls it Monday morning

[00:00:37] episodes, but it used to be Monday morning marketing because he's a marketing guy. Anyhow, the concept is a very single tip or suggestion or whatever, and it's not always about marketing. I was on there and I talked about how

[00:00:51] multitasking is a myth. I'll actually link that episode in the show notes so you can check it out. But what I liked about it was it was short. It was short, and it was a single one-note thing. It wasn't a long winding conversation. It was like

[00:01:04] he asked me to come up with the concept, he asked me about it, and we did like a 12-minute podcast. I liked it. I liked the shortness of it. I liked the directness of it. I liked the

[00:01:13] applicability of it. So I'm like, man, that's a great idea. So I sort of thought about it for a little while, came up with the idea of calling it a reusable tip, and I'll just spell the joke out. Of course in dentistry,

[00:01:25] you can sterilize certain tips and they're reusable, blah blah blah. I thought about tips. So what I would like to do is for listeners who have an idea of a good tip that other listeners might benefit from, whether it's a clinical tip or

[00:01:40] some kind of a workflow tip or a business tip, hiring tip, life tip, but just like a single thing that's really been helpful in their life. I would love to have you guys come up with that and come on the show. And here's the deal.

[00:02:17] up, something that's been useful for you. And so I'm gonna go first. My reusable tip today. I just started using this week. I'm really it's funny. Okay. So I used to use go to my PC to log into my, um, my office PCs and realized it's really expensive.

[00:02:35] It's, it's a Citrix product product. It's really, it's, it's kind of an old school, original, you know, remote login program from a while ago. And to be frank, I just didn't ever stop using it because I didn't realize how expensive it was until I saw one.

[00:02:51] I'm like, this is ridiculously expensive. And I looked around for another product and the product that when you Google it, it's called splash top. Oh my gosh. What a great program. It's much less expensive. It's like, I think it's like, I don't know.

[00:03:02] It's like 40 bucks a year or so. It might even be 99 bucks a year for it, but, but you've got kind of unlimited remote systems. So I like to be able to remote into my office and I'm not using a cloud-based software.

[00:03:14] I gotta change that at some point too. We're working on that as well. But so I need to be able to remote into my office to see my office computers.

[00:03:22] So I started using splash top and it's so much better. Oh, so much better than any, any remote system I've used before.

[00:03:29] And, and I remember when I was in Chicago this year, uh, they were talking about using the wireless, uh, trios five with a splash top in whatever room you wanted to. So you'd literally remote.

[00:03:39] You have one super spec'd out scanning computer and you can actually link your, your wireless scanner to this one computer in one part of the office and use wifi to scan

[00:03:51] to that computer, but you use splash top to see what you're scanning on whatever computers in the office. So basically you make a, like a wireless network for your scanner. I haven't done that yet. I'm still looking at that.

[00:04:03] Uh, here's a little tip too, that, uh, Armin, uh, Dr. Armin Mirzaian is going to be speaking at the Vetter Society up here in Northern Michigan in September. And I'm going to be getting more information out there.

[00:04:13] So I want, if you guys are interested in seeing Armin and he's bringing the whole crew and they're going to have a whole bunch of demo machines and all that stuff. So the Cadre crew is coming to Northern Michigan in September.

[00:04:22] And I want you guys all to come visit with, be my guests there at the Vetter meeting where you get a bunch of great CE and it's a beautiful Northwest Michigan and fall. It's fantastic. Anyhow. So, and I knew that that was a thing you could do.

[00:04:35] I knew you could do this splash top wirelessly. Finally. So I use right now an, uh, a MetaDyce 700 scanner, and we have it on a cart with its kind of spec'd out laptop on the cart and something I've done. The cart, I have a mouse with it.

[00:04:50] That's better than the track pad, but I don't have a big space for the mouse. It's a really kind of a small cart. It's kind of a pain.

[00:04:57] And I like to mark the margins when I, when I take an impression or take a scan, I mark the margins myself. It's been something I've done from the very beginning. I feel like I owe that to my lab technician. So there's no questions about anything.

[00:05:08] And honestly, I used to like to ditch dyes when I would do, uh, you know, polyvinyl impressions. The difference being you had to ship those back and forth and stuff. Well, this, I like to mark margins.

[00:05:18] So anyhow, uh, I used to mark margins and I'd have to go back into the operator and the workflow went something like I do the scan and then I would get up and my assistant would make the temporary.

[00:05:28] And I would, I would come in and finish it once the temporary was done. We get the, you know, we'd, we'd get the patient finished up in there, but it was kind of crowded in the operatory for me to go right to do the margins there.

[00:05:38] So typically the patient was done and out of the chair, and then I had to go back and mark the margins. And that it was, it was like, it was the least slick part of my, you know, my, my, uh, workflow for digital, you know, indirect restorations.

[00:05:52] It was like, I had to come back after we were all done and mark the margins because before we could send it. And so that was, and I thought about that.

[00:05:59] I'm like, you know, I have Splashtop on these computers and I can, I can remote into other computers. So lo and behold, I installed Splashtop on our scanning computer. And now in my personal office, in the, in my office, I have a huge screen.

[00:06:14] I mean, it's a, it's a triple wide screens, craziest thing you ever saw. It's like 48 inches wide. I do, you love to edit podcasts and that thing, cause it's just, you can just spread all out.

[00:06:23] And I have a really fast Mac computer with a huge hard drive and I've got a great mouse and I've got all kinds of room.

[00:06:31] But I, I, the MEDIT login software that you can see your cases that you log in browser wise is cool, but that's not, you can't mark margins on that software. You have to mark margins within the actual, whatever computer is, has the scanner attached to it.

[00:06:47] So lo and behold, I went ahead and use Splashtop and dog, God, that is awesome. It's fantastic. I love it.

[00:06:54] So I can go in my assistant's making the temporary and I can go in, in my personal office, have a sip of coffee or whatever, and mark the margins on this beautiful big screen with my mouse and all the, and all that.

[00:07:06] I, my preferred mouse, let's be honest. Oh, it's so much better. So much better. And I already, I had everything already. I already had Splashtop. I already had it. I didn't have to pay for anything. I didn't have to.

[00:07:16] And now the workflow, literally the case is sent in off to the lab before the patient leaves. Cause while the temporary is getting taken care of, I'm, I'm marking the margins and sending it to the lab. So this is a great thing.

[00:07:31] I there's clearly, if you think about it, having ease of use to remote from one community computer to another within your office, there's probably a lot of things you could do with this, but that's what I'm doing.

[00:07:41] My crown and bridge workflow on the MetaDyze 700 has just, I mean, it was pretty good. And honestly, I can, I can get most teeth depending on anesthesia.

[00:07:50] If it's like a single tooth crown, I can patients, you know, from, from the assistant going to the, you know, the waiting room and getting them to when they leave is like 40 minutes, 45 minutes max.

[00:08:03] Pretty fast turnaround for, you know, I'd argue it's almost fast to do indirects at this point than it is to do a direct restoration in some ways. But this just makes it that much better. Like, and it's, it's wrapped up before the patient ever leaves.

[00:08:15] Very happy with it. So that's the software is called Splashtop. I'll put a link in the show notes and I I'd love to hear if you guys are using this for anything else too. So that is my reusable tip. My first reusable tip for you.
