[00:00:01] [SPEAKER_02]: This is a production of the Very Dental Podcast Network.
[00:00:16] [SPEAKER_02]: Welcome to the Very Clinical Podcast. In about the time it takes to do an MO on three, we will entertain and amaze you with tips and tricks on regular daily dentistry. Here's Kevin and Zach.
[00:00:28] [SPEAKER_03]: What is up, Very Clinical listeners? And welcome back to yet another episode of the Very Clinical Podcast. I'm Zach Miners, coming to you from Kansas City, Missouri, with me as always, my trusty co-host, Dr. Kevin Hare Fryer. Kevin, what's up, man?
[00:00:42] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm doing great. We have Papa Randy back in the house.
[00:00:46] [SPEAKER_00]: Round three.
[00:00:48] [SPEAKER_00]: Hello, Randy.
[00:00:49] [SPEAKER_00]: How are we doing?
[00:00:50] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm doing great.
[00:00:52] [SPEAKER_00]: Zach, did you know that Randy is a TV star?
[00:00:55] [SPEAKER_03]: I did. I did know that Randy is a TV star.
[00:00:58] [SPEAKER_00]: But more to the point his daughter is.
[00:01:00] [SPEAKER_03]: Yes.
[00:01:00] [SPEAKER_03]: Big star.
[00:01:02] [SPEAKER_03]: Much more the daughter.
[00:01:03] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[00:01:04] [SPEAKER_00]: So can you tell us what Chelsea's doing now and what her new gig is and all that?
[00:01:09] [SPEAKER_00]: Sure.
[00:01:09] [SPEAKER_00]: How's that going and all that?
[00:01:11] [SPEAKER_01]: Sure.
[00:01:11] [SPEAKER_01]: So, she moved on from MTV about in 2020.
[00:01:16] [SPEAKER_01]: And then about a year and a half or so she signed on with HGTV.
[00:01:21] [SPEAKER_01]: So they have their own TV series on HGTV called Down Home Fab.
[00:01:27] [SPEAKER_01]: Two seasons have aired.
[00:01:29] [SPEAKER_01]: And if things go the way hopefully they'll go that they'll start filming their third season here.
[00:01:36] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:01:37] [SPEAKER_01]: Maybe sometime this fall.
[00:01:39] [SPEAKER_01]: So that's going well.
[00:01:41] [SPEAKER_01]: So that's going well.
[00:01:41] [SPEAKER_01]: She's loving that.
[00:01:42] [SPEAKER_01]: She's learning a ton.
[00:01:44] [SPEAKER_01]: And it's just, that's just a great experience for her.
[00:01:48] [SPEAKER_01]: She's loving it.
[00:01:49] [SPEAKER_01]: And they opened a actual brick and mortar decor store.
[00:01:53] [SPEAKER_01]: So they have a building or rented a building or, you know, in a mall type of thing.
[00:02:00] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:02:01] [SPEAKER_01]: Right near Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
[00:02:03] [SPEAKER_01]: Called Down Home by DeBoers.
[00:02:06] [SPEAKER_01]: And it's a home decor, that type of stuff.
[00:02:09] [SPEAKER_01]: So that's been open for about two weeks.
[00:02:11] [SPEAKER_01]: So that's going very well for them.
[00:02:14] [SPEAKER_01]: And then did have a lady drive through their front window the other day.
[00:02:17] [SPEAKER_01]: So that got me the old phone call crying from the daughter that I haven't gotten for a long time.
[00:02:26] [SPEAKER_01]: But nobody was hurt and things can get fixed.
[00:02:29] [SPEAKER_01]: So it's not that big a deal.
[00:02:31] [SPEAKER_03]: So, Randy, like with, with a show like Down Home Fab, like how many episodes they shoot?
[00:02:39] [SPEAKER_03]: How, how, how big of a commitment is that?
[00:02:41] [SPEAKER_03]: How long is a, is a shoot on that to get a season in?
[00:02:45] [SPEAKER_01]: So the first season was six episodes.
[00:02:47] [SPEAKER_01]: So six houses.
[00:02:48] [SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
[00:02:49] [SPEAKER_01]: And then the second season was they bumped it up to eight.
[00:02:52] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:02:52] [SPEAKER_01]: And it's a whole summer long.
[00:02:54] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, they, you can't get two to three, four houses going at the same time.
[00:03:00] [SPEAKER_01]: Um, you know, going back and forth.
[00:03:04] [SPEAKER_01]: Um, but it'll take a whole summer or whatever season it is, I guess.
[00:03:09] [SPEAKER_01]: Um, it's, it's kind of interesting how they do it.
[00:03:13] [SPEAKER_01]: It's kind of fun to sit back and watch a little bit.
[00:03:16] [SPEAKER_01]: I used to do that a lot on MTV.
[00:03:18] [SPEAKER_01]: I would sit back and talk to the, the camera people or the sound people.
[00:03:22] [SPEAKER_01]: Cause they were all freelance and they would be where they'd go work with Bobby Flay on the home network or discovery, do some stuff like that.
[00:03:30] [SPEAKER_01]: So they, they all bounce around from show to show.
[00:03:33] [SPEAKER_01]: So some of those guys are, they're gals and ladies.
[00:03:36] [SPEAKER_01]: Um, very fascinating people, just the lifestyle they lead and the places they go and the things they see.
[00:03:43] [SPEAKER_03]: What was your, uh, recording commitment when you were doing team mom?
[00:03:47] [SPEAKER_03]: Um, what was, how, how, uh, how much time were you in?
[00:03:50] [SPEAKER_01]: Um, no, not much at all.
[00:03:52] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, they, they would come like once a month.
[00:03:55] [SPEAKER_01]: They did pile about a crew of seven or eight and they'll fly out from New York and stay for about four days.
[00:04:01] [SPEAKER_01]: And in the beginning when Chelsea was living with me, I would, I mean, I'd film with her almost every time.
[00:04:07] [SPEAKER_01]: Um, but later on, once she was out on her own and, uh, or married with Cole and that type of stuff, I was, I was just more comedic relief.
[00:04:18] [SPEAKER_01]: Awesome. Awesome.
[00:04:20] [SPEAKER_00]: Love it. Are you on the new show at all?
[00:04:23] [SPEAKER_01]: I've been on it a couple of times.
[00:04:24] [SPEAKER_01]: My wife's been on it a couple of times.
[00:04:26] [SPEAKER_01]: My wife owns a decor store also.
[00:04:27] [SPEAKER_01]: Right, right, right.
[00:04:28] [SPEAKER_01]: So they, that's kinda, kinda, they can all talk about all that stuff.
[00:04:32] [SPEAKER_01]: That's really not my, I do want to, I told her this next season, if I can get on, I want to be on one of the demolition, you know, swinging the sledgehammer.
[00:04:40] [SPEAKER_01]: Swinging the sledgehammer.
[00:04:42] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:04:42] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:04:42] [SPEAKER_01]: There you go.
[00:04:44] [SPEAKER_01]: I can do that.
[00:04:45] [SPEAKER_00]: Or you could drive your car through the house.
[00:04:48] [SPEAKER_01]: I could do that.
[00:04:50] [SPEAKER_01]: All right.
[00:04:51] [SPEAKER_01]: I'd rather drive someone else's.
[00:04:53] [SPEAKER_03]: Thanks.
[00:04:54] [SPEAKER_03]: Absolutely.
[00:04:55] [SPEAKER_03]: All right, Randy, uh, we're to the, the, the deeper part, part three here.
[00:05:00] [SPEAKER_03]: We've, uh, if you've, uh, been listening to Randy last couple of weeks, you've heard him talk about, uh, uh, how implants change his practice clinically and about how a, you know, kind of a mindset shift, uh, changed the business of his practice.
[00:05:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Now we're going to see what he's changed his mind on, if anything major on just life in general.
[00:05:19] [SPEAKER_03]: So Randy shoot, do you, you have a, is there any one particular thing that you've really shifted on?
[00:05:25] [SPEAKER_01]: Um, for the first, no, who knows?
[00:05:30] [SPEAKER_01]: It was two thirds, three fourths of my career.
[00:05:32] [SPEAKER_01]: I workaholic workaholic.
[00:05:36] [SPEAKER_01]: Can't take time off.
[00:05:37] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, um, you, it's, you, you take a day off and you, the only thought I had was how much production I just lost, you know, stuff like that.
[00:05:48] [SPEAKER_01]: I, and I've gotten to the point now where, uh, you know, my practice will not wither up and die if I take a few days off.
[00:05:56] [SPEAKER_01]: And, uh, so we've been taking a lot more days off and, uh, it still keeps going.
[00:06:04] [SPEAKER_01]: Oddly enough, it's there when I get back and, uh, you can't get that time back.
[00:06:09] [SPEAKER_01]: And I wish I could go back, you know, and change a few things, but, uh, I hear you cannot do that.
[00:06:17] [SPEAKER_00]: So all you can, all you can do is this guy with a DeLorean.
[00:06:22] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[00:06:22] [SPEAKER_00]: That guy, he can help you out.
[00:06:24] [SPEAKER_00]: That guy can help you out.
[00:06:25] [SPEAKER_01]: And I still do not think a DeLorean can go 88 miles an hour.
[00:06:29] [SPEAKER_01]: They are just the most underpowered vehicles ever.
[00:06:32] [SPEAKER_03]: But anyway, that's true.
[00:06:34] [SPEAKER_01]: So basically that's my mindset is, uh, get, you know, hit 60.
[00:06:40] [SPEAKER_01]: You better just start stopping and smelling the roses and stuff.
[00:06:44] [SPEAKER_01]: And so that's, that's basically the, the biggest change I've made is that I'm willing to take some time off.
[00:06:52] [SPEAKER_03]: Did you cut back your number of days per week or just your number of weeks of vacation?
[00:06:58] [SPEAKER_03]: Did you increase those?
[00:06:59] [SPEAKER_01]: Uh, well, it was for the first 30 years, it was four and a half days a week, you know, Friday till noon.
[00:07:06] [SPEAKER_01]: And then, uh, one day my wife called my front desk and said, uh, yeah, he's not gonna work Fridays no more.
[00:07:12] [SPEAKER_01]: So quit scheduling.
[00:07:15] [SPEAKER_03]: All right.
[00:07:16] [SPEAKER_01]: And, uh, that is, that has rung true for the last few years.
[00:07:20] [SPEAKER_01]: Um, so, I mean, that's not a big cut, you know, really, but taking time, actually taking more days off, I guess is where it's at.
[00:07:32] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't really knock a whole lot of weeks off, um, per se.
[00:07:36] [SPEAKER_01]: Um, but a lot more long weekends, a lot more.
[00:07:40] [SPEAKER_01]: And I'll take a week off.
[00:07:41] [SPEAKER_01]: We take Thanksgiving off, take Christmas week off, that stuff like that.
[00:07:47] [SPEAKER_01]: So, and, uh, time well spent.
[00:07:50] [SPEAKER_00]: Well, by the time this comes out, I'll have spent my two weeks in Croatia and I have never taken two weeks consecutively away from my office ever.
[00:08:03] [SPEAKER_01]: No, nor have I.
[00:08:05] [SPEAKER_01]: Um, I don't, I get my knee replaced and only took nine days off.
[00:08:09] [SPEAKER_00]: Right.
[00:08:10] [SPEAKER_00]: Oh my gosh.
[00:08:11] [SPEAKER_00]: Wow.
[00:08:12] [SPEAKER_00]: I took, I had my appendix out and took two days off and was back to work against doctor's orders.
[00:08:17] [SPEAKER_00]: So.
[00:08:17] [SPEAKER_00]: What the hell's wrong?
[00:08:18] [SPEAKER_01]: Here's a funny story.
[00:08:20] [SPEAKER_01]: So I went in for my three month check on my knee with the surgeon and I told him, well, I did exactly what you told me.
[00:08:27] [SPEAKER_01]: I went back to work after nine days and he said, no, no, that's not what I told you.
[00:08:32] [SPEAKER_01]: I told you eight, I told you eight weeks.
[00:08:36] [SPEAKER_01]: So it wasn't.
[00:08:38] [SPEAKER_01]: It really wasn't.
[00:08:39] [SPEAKER_01]: I was going nuts at home.
[00:08:41] [SPEAKER_01]: So, but, uh,
[00:08:43] [SPEAKER_00]: but you started to say what is wrong with us.
[00:08:45] [SPEAKER_00]: And I think from my observation, it is a generational thing.
[00:08:50] [SPEAKER_00]: Um, I can see that.
[00:08:52] [SPEAKER_00]: I think that we're like, we're tail end of the baby boomers or whatever, but there's some sort of hyper work ethic ingrained in us.
[00:09:03] [SPEAKER_00]: Cause, uh, you know, like, uh, Rick Sullivan, Sully's dad, definitely same sort of just go, go, go, go, go.
[00:09:11] [SPEAKER_00]: And he's taken some time off, um, more time off recently too.
[00:09:17] [SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, again, behind the scenes, Zach and I have talked and Alan have talked about like, I just, you know, I'm healthy now.
[00:09:26] [SPEAKER_00]: I want to travel now.
[00:09:27] [SPEAKER_00]: I don't want to wait till I'm quote retired and can't, um, not as mobile or, or whatever.
[00:09:34] [SPEAKER_01]: Sure.
[00:09:37] [SPEAKER_01]: It's messed up to, to work your ass off and then think you're going to enjoy life afterwards when you're, when you can't hardly get up out of bed without, you know, hurting and all that stuff.
[00:09:48] [SPEAKER_01]: So, so, you know, you're really taking the attitude of having fun while you can have fun and still have a career.
[00:09:55] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm just going to have to start balancing it.
[00:09:58] [SPEAKER_01]: I blame my, I blame mine on being a farm boy, you know, just work, work, work, work, work.
[00:10:06] [SPEAKER_01]: My dad worked, work, work, work, worked.
[00:10:07] [SPEAKER_01]: And, and so, but, and then I'm, I am following in your footsteps, Kevin, in that I do have an associate on the line.
[00:10:15] [SPEAKER_01]: Right.
[00:10:16] [SPEAKER_01]: So nice.
[00:10:16] [SPEAKER_01]: Start in the end of July.
[00:10:17] [SPEAKER_01]: Start in the end of July.
[00:10:19] [SPEAKER_01]: So first thing I'm going to do is get him there for a week and then I'm going to leave for a week, go to Sturgis.
[00:10:24] [SPEAKER_01]: There you go.
[00:10:26] [SPEAKER_01]: Hopefully he'll hold the place down.
[00:10:28] [SPEAKER_03]: Are you planning to knock back to three days then at all once that happens?
[00:10:34] [SPEAKER_01]: Or is that the, that would probably, that would probably be the, the, the goal.
[00:10:39] [SPEAKER_01]: Certainly.
[00:10:41] [SPEAKER_01]: I want him to be busy.
[00:10:44] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, I want him to hit the ground running.
[00:10:46] [SPEAKER_01]: So I'm going to do everything I can to make sure that happens.
[00:10:51] [SPEAKER_03]: Sure.
[00:10:51] [SPEAKER_03]: Move my friend.
[00:10:52] [SPEAKER_03]: Yep.
[00:10:53] [SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely.
[00:10:54] [SPEAKER_03]: No, I, I agree with you.
[00:10:56] [SPEAKER_03]: I, I tried, that's one of the things that I mentioned on my, on my change my mind is that like, you know, I, I thought about it.
[00:11:04] [SPEAKER_03]: I was like, man, my kids are only going to be, I have a 10 and a nine year old at home.
[00:11:08] [SPEAKER_03]: I, they're only going to be this age one time and there's going to be like, you know, 10 summers of family vacations and then they're going to be gone.
[00:11:15] [SPEAKER_03]: And I was like, you know what?
[00:11:16] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm going to, we're going to do it.
[00:11:17] [SPEAKER_03]: We're going to, we're going to do all those vacations.
[00:11:20] [SPEAKER_03]: And so, and so.
[00:11:21] [SPEAKER_03]: You won't regret it.
[00:11:22] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:11:22] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't think I've worked there.
[00:11:24] [SPEAKER_00]: And you've done such great things with your kids.
[00:11:25] [SPEAKER_00]: The skiing, the boating, the Grand Canyon trip.
[00:11:29] [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, that's, you, you created some memories.
[00:11:32] [SPEAKER_03]: The Grand Canyon was a big hit.
[00:11:34] [SPEAKER_03]: And yet the, the, the boating thing, I know Randy has a, has a boat also, but you know, I, I've built that in as like, it's like, we can take a little micro vacation.
[00:11:43] [SPEAKER_03]: A couple of times a week is the lakes a mile from the house.
[00:11:46] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, we're, I was just vacationing for a few hours on Sunday morning, doing a little kneeboarding and some tubing and we had a great time.
[00:11:53] [SPEAKER_03]: So you got to build in.
[00:11:54] [SPEAKER_03]: Sometimes you need a longer trip, but sometimes it's just finding a way to enjoy, you know, weekends and whatnot.
[00:12:03] [SPEAKER_03]: Again, it's, I think it, maybe it's easier to say that as a mid-career person that doesn't, you know, isn't as, doesn't have the debt ringing around your neck, but I don't know.
[00:12:11] [SPEAKER_03]: I feel like everyone should be able to find a way to carve something out.
[00:12:14] [SPEAKER_03]: It doesn't have to be expensive to be fun.
[00:12:16] [SPEAKER_01]: It doesn't have to be expensive.
[00:12:18] [SPEAKER_01]: That's a, yeah, that's a big thing too.
[00:12:20] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, time is the most valuable.
[00:12:24] [SPEAKER_01]: Without a doubt.
[00:12:25] [SPEAKER_01]: When your kids are little, they don't give a shit if you're walking around the block.
[00:12:29] [SPEAKER_01]: Can you swear on this?
[00:12:31] [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, you're fine.
[00:12:32] [SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
[00:12:33] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, a five-year-old doesn't care what you're doing with him.
[00:12:36] [SPEAKER_01]: You could take him to Walmart.
[00:12:38] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it's the time that's the valuable part.
[00:12:42] [SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
[00:12:42] [SPEAKER_01]: It's not what you are doing.
[00:12:44] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:12:44] [SPEAKER_01]: I used to take them.
[00:12:45] [SPEAKER_01]: When mine were little, I used to take them even like on a, sometimes I'd go fix someone's denture at a nursing home.
[00:12:53] [SPEAKER_01]: I'd take the kids with me.
[00:12:54] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, I'd take one with me in a nursing home.
[00:12:56] [SPEAKER_01]: Old people love them.
[00:12:58] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, just, just doing stuff.
[00:12:59] [SPEAKER_01]: Go to, God, times I remember from being a kid, you know, going to my dad to Campbell's Supply, getting an orange pop, you know, stuff like that.
[00:13:08] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:13:09] [SPEAKER_03]: It doesn't take much.
[00:13:10] [SPEAKER_03]: Like you said, you're right.
[00:13:11] [SPEAKER_03]: It's, the time is, the time is more important, ultimately.
[00:13:15] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, something cool is nice, but like, you're right.
[00:13:20] [SPEAKER_03]: It's the time.
[00:13:21] [SPEAKER_03]: Because a lot of my memories are things like, like going to get a soda at the, you know, the, the, the local convenience store or something like that.
[00:13:29] [SPEAKER_03]: Or a Slurpee or something.
[00:13:30] [SPEAKER_00]: Charlie brought that up last time we were together.
[00:13:33] [SPEAKER_00]: This one time we got a root beer.
[00:13:35] [SPEAKER_00]: Like that was the, that was the big memory of, of that.
[00:13:40] [SPEAKER_01]: And do you remember what he was talking about?
[00:13:42] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I actually do.
[00:13:44] [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, do you?
[00:13:44] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[00:13:45] [SPEAKER_00]: It was, it was, it was a memorable time.
[00:13:47] [SPEAKER_00]: But, yeah, but whatever we were doing, it was the root beer that was the most important.
[00:13:53] [SPEAKER_01]: The whole thing.
[00:13:55] [SPEAKER_01]: And that's the way it is.
[00:13:56] [SPEAKER_01]: And sometimes people think they have to work too hard to make memories and you don't.
[00:14:03] [SPEAKER_03]: No, no, you really, no, you don't.
[00:14:06] [SPEAKER_03]: You don't.
[00:14:06] [SPEAKER_03]: For sure.
[00:14:07] [SPEAKER_03]: But, I mean, that, that is a valuable thing to learn before.
[00:14:12] [SPEAKER_03]: Like I said, you're, the future's not guaranteed.
[00:14:15] [SPEAKER_03]: Your health's not guaranteed.
[00:14:16] [SPEAKER_03]: You got to, you know, do it while you can.
[00:14:19] [SPEAKER_03]: Do it while you can.
[00:14:20] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I think we all know situations where you have a family friend or a patient or someone worked their ass off and then retired and was going to bought their motor home or whatever.
[00:14:31] [SPEAKER_01]: It was going to enjoy life and then drop dead.
[00:14:34] [SPEAKER_03]: You know?
[00:14:35] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:14:36] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, sure.
[00:14:36] [SPEAKER_03]: Or something happened to them where they became immobile and it was, you know.
[00:14:40] [SPEAKER_01]: Or, yeah, a stroke or something, you know, something.
[00:14:43] [SPEAKER_01]: Sure.
[00:14:44] [SPEAKER_01]: And so.
[00:14:45] [SPEAKER_01]: Yep.
[00:14:45] [SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely.
[00:14:46] [SPEAKER_01]: Have a good time when you can.
[00:14:48] [SPEAKER_03]: Absolutely.
[00:14:49] [SPEAKER_03]: Love it.
[00:14:50] [SPEAKER_03]: Thank you, Randy.

[00:15:19] [SPEAKER_01]: Nice.
[00:15:20] [SPEAKER_03]: All right.
[00:15:21] [SPEAKER_03]: Kevin, any final thoughts from Randy's session with us here?
