[00:00:00] Picture this. You've got perfect isolation. Your matrix is placed. You've etched and bonded,

[00:00:05] and you're going to place in foldable. You look up and see your assistance back running out of the

[00:00:09] operator because you're out of foldable tips. Maybe it doesn't happen in your office, but if you're like most

[00:00:14] offices, it sometimes does. We try to organize every aspect of our business, but let's face it, maintaining order in

[00:00:20] the midst of a busy practice is easier said than done. Small oversights can snowball into big challenges,

[00:00:25] running out of supplies, misplacing instruments and worst of all, when your assistant has to leave chair side

[00:00:30] to retrieve something they forgot. What's the solution? A lean clinical workflow, a systematic approach that brings

[00:00:36] order to the chaos, benefiting dental practices of all sizes, and the only one leading to charge in this

[00:00:41] revolution is Zirk, the company behind the best dental material ever used. They've created the color method,

[00:00:46] a lean clinical workflow framework designed to transform the way your team stores materials,

[00:00:51] restock materials and reprocesses instruments. You've heard us talk about it before,

[00:00:54] and now it's time to take action. Picture a practice where every instrument has its place,

[00:00:59] where supplies are never depleted, and where the overwhelming amount of instruments and materials

[00:01:03] gives way to a seamlessly organized workflow. Don't let the disorder of things dictate your day.

[00:01:08] Join the movement towards efficiency and excellence with Zirk's color method.

[00:01:31] This is a production of the very dental podcast network.

[00:01:43] Welcome to the very clinical podcast. In about the time it takes to do an MO on three,

[00:01:50] we will entertain and amaze you with tips and tricks on regular daily dentistry.

[00:01:55] Here's Kevin and Zach. What is up, very clinical listeners and welcome back to yet another episode

[00:02:01] of the very clinical podcast. I'm Zach Reiner's coming to you from Kansas City, Missouri,

[00:02:06] with me as always. I trust you, co-hosts, Dr. Kevin, hair, fryer, Kevin. What is going on in Cleveland?

[00:02:13] Not much is going on in Cleveland, but I'm getting ready to leave on a ski trip and so are you.

[00:02:17] We have to get this podcast done very quickly.

[00:02:20] Very quick. I have to pack my bags and go.

[00:02:22] As you are listening to this, I am on the slopes.

[00:02:26] As you are listening to this, I'm trying to get out of my office and get to an airplane.

[00:02:31] Good.

[00:02:33] Enjoy Park City.

[00:02:34] I am.

[00:02:38] I'm dismayed by something.

[00:02:42] I talked to my son who stores my ski stuff in Salt Lake City and he asked me if I would take it

[00:02:49] home because they need more space in their tiny little apartment. So I'm losing my storage bin.

[00:02:55] What?

[00:02:56] A pair of skis and boots?

[00:02:59] There's apartments that small.

[00:03:00] I just, well, he asked me and I was like, can you take your stuff home because we need the room or

[00:03:07] and what is they're going to say? No.

[00:03:09] Well, I guess, man, Charlie, if you're listening, that's whack.

[00:03:14] Okay. That sucks, Charlie.

[00:03:18] Horrible.

[00:03:19] Man, come on. We know you. You've been on the show. You could do better than that.

[00:03:23] Get the man a locker.

[00:03:25] No.

[00:03:26] I got to haul that stuff back with me and it's going to sit in the garage for eight months.

[00:03:30] And then you get to put it on the ground so you're back.

[00:03:33] He's handing you a bill.

[00:03:34] What a pain.

[00:03:37] Worthless.

[00:03:37] Charlie.

[00:03:38] Charlie.

[00:03:39] All right, hey, we brought back our guests as we promised in the previous episode. We brought back

[00:03:45] our guest Kevin Bringer, bring your guest in.

[00:03:47] Welcome back.

[00:03:48] Tim Anderson from the North Dakota.

[00:03:51] How's it going over there in North Dakota?

[00:03:53] What's up everybody? The North Dakota is still cold.

[00:03:56] So I got that going and I'm not going skiing.

[00:03:59] I kind of you should really don't have any mountains in North Dakota.

[00:04:02] I don't know if you've been in North Dakota but it's your close to mountains.

[00:04:06] You're close to them and I am.

[00:04:08] There's really no skiing in North Dakota.

[00:04:10] I guess I've never looked at a lot of the stuff.

[00:04:10] We have like, we have a couple places with some hills that are big enough to have a lift.

[00:04:16] So we have to get over these things right now.

[00:04:19] Okay.

[00:04:20] So when this comes out, I will be finishing up thank goodness the hockey season from craziness

[00:04:27] with my kids. So I've been on the road every weekend for the last six weeks and I'm looking forward

[00:04:34] not to staying in a crappy hotel in some small town in North Dakota.

[00:04:38] So yeah, hockey seasons coming to an end, I'm looking forward to that.

[00:04:41] And then yeah, move forward.

[00:04:43] You've had enough of motel sixes and all the ins.

[00:04:46] You know, my kids, it's interesting because like my kids are now getting the point where I'm like,

[00:04:52] okay, my kids are living a different life than I lived because we'll go to tournaments.

[00:04:58] And you know, the team books a hotel based on keeping it reasonable.

[00:05:04] Well, my kids are used to traveling like when I travel and I just want to stay in a nicer hotel

[00:05:12] when I travel because I'm like, I work hard enough. I just don't want to stay at it.

[00:05:15] So when we get to these places, we were in some small, small town north Dakota.

[00:05:20] I don't know if we were like botn or some like my kids were like, you know, this really isn't

[00:05:24] nice as the fair mountain Maui.

[00:05:27] You're not wrong.

[00:05:29] You're not wrong.

[00:05:31] Like clearly keep that to yourself.

[00:05:33] But yeah, no, they're good kids but yeah, they've really haven't had a very rough life from

[00:05:40] that standpoint.

[00:05:41] There's a funny twist on that, Tim.

[00:05:42] I mean, I think a lot of us are in dentistry so that we can afford nicer places like that.

[00:05:49] But I've stated some like nice, my kids have stated some nice places but like we get to a holiday

[00:05:56] in when we drive to our Colorado ski trip usually stop in the middle of Kansas somewhere and

[00:06:01] that's where we stop for the stop driving up.

[00:06:03] It's not got about six hours of driving to me and I'm done.

[00:06:06] They love the holiday in breakfast so much like the cinnamon rolls and the unlimited cereal

[00:06:11] and make your own waffle.

[00:06:15] They're like, wow, this is great.

[00:06:16] Why can't we stay in these all the time?

[00:06:19] This breakfast is amazing.

[00:06:20] That's all it takes.

[00:06:21] It's perspective.

[00:06:22] Good kind of garbage breakfast.

[00:06:24] Have you guys seen that?

[00:06:27] You know, you got the waffle maker things right?

[00:06:28] Have you seen the new automated pancake machines that holiday you have?

[00:06:32] Oh yeah.

[00:06:33] My kids, that is like the coolest thing.

[00:06:35] They like hit the button and press the button and then conveyor belt.

[00:06:38] Oh yeah.

[00:06:39] I know.

[00:06:39] I've seen that.

[00:06:40] That's pretty cool.

[00:06:40] So smart.

[00:06:41] Yeah.

[00:06:41] So yeah, it's all about that perspective.

[00:06:44] They think that holiday in and the breakfast is

[00:06:47] well, never to only your smarter if you stay in a holiday in express.

[00:06:50] So that's according to the commercials.

[00:06:52] How are the commercials going?

[00:06:54] All right, so we brought Tim on to talk about printing but before we talk about 3D printing,

[00:06:58] I should say.

[00:06:59] Not just regular.

[00:07:00] Yeah, not none of that.

[00:07:01] Not matrix.

[00:07:02] I thought we were doing that matrix.

[00:07:03] We're not.

[00:07:04] Yeah, some good.

[00:07:05] That was the paper one with the side paper like the holes in the side right?

[00:07:08] Yeah.

[00:07:09] Oh, yep.

[00:07:10] That's the good thing.

[00:07:11] I think I'm probably the last generation that actually use those.

[00:07:14] I think there's anyone younger than you.

[00:07:16] Yeah, anybody here who's not already tuned out.

[00:07:18] Yeah, but still using at the car rental place sometimes.

[00:07:21] Anyway, they do use it.

[00:07:22] It's kind of ways.

[00:07:26] Our bit tonight is alternate.

[00:07:28] It's an alternate occupation.

[00:07:32] So, you know, we're all through our Dennis, I believe.

[00:07:36] And all three of us are podcasters now, I believe.

[00:07:38] So that's great.

[00:07:39] But somewhere along the line, you may have thought, you know, like what was another job

[00:07:44] that you could have done or would have done or would have enjoyed doing?

[00:07:47] So I'm going to start because I have two.

[00:07:51] My first alternate job would be UPS delivery man

[00:07:56] because you get to wear shorts in the summer.

[00:08:00] Yeah.

[00:08:01] You get to drive a really cool van.

[00:08:03] That's brown.

[00:08:06] And everywhere you go, you're delivering packages to people

[00:08:10] that most of the time they want.

[00:08:12] So it's like your Santa Claus, but you're wearing shorts in the summer.

[00:08:17] See now you got every UPS driver on the planet going see he gets it.

[00:08:22] Yeah, he gets it.

[00:08:24] And then my other alternate occupation is I want to work, it's not really an occupation.

[00:08:30] It's something I aspire to.

[00:08:33] I want to work in the Apple store and teach people, old people in particular,

[00:08:38] how to use their iPhones or computers because I don't know if you've ever been in the Apple

[00:08:41] store and watch this happen, but it's pure comedy.

[00:08:45] And I give those guys all the credit in the world like, you know, they'll,

[00:08:50] they're explaining how to send an email in such basic language.

[00:08:56] Like, like, they're talking to 65 year olds, I almost have 60 year old of which I'm one.

[00:09:02] Yeah.

[00:09:03] As if they're five year olds and it just hilarious to me,

[00:09:08] they have a lot of patience.

[00:09:09] It is fun.

[00:09:11] I would just do it for the humor aspect of the Apple store employee.

[00:09:15] So those are my two alternate occupations.

[00:09:18] Zach, you're next.

[00:09:20] Okay.

[00:09:21] What I would have liked to have done is be the morning sports radio guy, you know,

[00:09:27] to the sack in the morning.

[00:09:29] Yeah.

[00:09:29] That's right.

[00:09:30] That's right.

[00:09:32] I would have loved just John about, I mean, we talk about sports in this podcast

[00:09:36] at the time we did it one with that.

[00:09:38] I would, part of the reason I would do in this is podcast because I just yapping about a topic

[00:09:44] that I like has always been something I've liked doing, you know.

[00:09:48] You're willing to yap with me and it's something we're talking about then that's great.

[00:09:52] So I would have loved that.

[00:09:55] And but odds are I would have gone to college and probably ended up as like just your rank

[00:10:03] and file IT guy type of a person.

[00:10:06] As it is, I will tell you I have no less than 10 computers that are not my office

[00:10:12] or my personal computers that are hooked to my chrome remote desktop

[00:10:16] that I have to log into.

[00:10:18] I got to fix my dad's thing and then I got to fix my uncle's computer.

[00:10:21] Right.

[00:10:22] And then I got to fix, you know, I've got seriously 10 different computers

[00:10:26] that aren't my office that I'm fixing.

[00:10:29] So do I, can you run this update?

[00:10:32] Something came up on the screen.

[00:10:34] So it's like you're working at the Apple store.

[00:10:36] I am kind of working it except for I'm not communicating on how to do it.

[00:10:40] I've given up on education.

[00:10:42] Yes, I'm like here to the point just get this done for you and then I'll fix it.

[00:10:46] Just I'll just give it, I'll get it done.

[00:10:49] It'll take 10 minutes to explain it in one minute for me to do it and I don't want to explain it.

[00:10:53] So there we go. IT guy.

[00:10:55] All right.

[00:10:55] 10 year up.

[00:10:57] So I'm going to go a Zach on having two.

[00:10:59] One that I really would like and then another one where I'm like I actually legitimately wanted to.

[00:11:04] So I legitimately would have loved to have been become a pilot.

[00:11:10] Like for me,

[00:11:13] actually I really wanted my parents won me with the Air Force.

[00:11:16] I wanted like a fighter fighter pilot.

[00:11:19] Topgo.

[00:11:20] And preferably a helicopter.

[00:11:23] So like yeah there's something about the

[00:11:26] I don't know what it is.

[00:11:27] I don't know if it was, was it topgun back in the day or like I don't know it's just pilots

[00:11:31] that cool or what but I've always been intrigued by

[00:11:35] Ernotics, NASA, astronauts like that whole life path and

[00:11:43] yeah do you have your pilot's license?

[00:11:44] Have you have you pursued it?

[00:11:45] No.

[00:11:46] Cause I can't use the thing.

[00:11:49] I love my marriage

[00:11:50] and I have very expensive hobbies

[00:11:54] and aircrafts are not a hobby I need to get into at this point in my life.

[00:11:59] I gotcha.

[00:11:59] That's next level expensive for sure.

[00:12:01] But I totally see the appeal.

[00:12:04] Like I totally see the appeal.

[00:12:05] So I would have loved to have done that and I've always like the whole military concept

[00:12:10] to me is like my dad was in the military, a lot of my family.

[00:12:13] And so I really enjoyed that kind of lifestyle

[00:12:17] and with some I thought it would have liked.

[00:12:19] So instead I went these around and I just went to Minnesota and went to undergrad

[00:12:23] and then fell into dentistry actually.

[00:12:25] So but actually if I could do anything

[00:12:27] it'll like you could do whatever you want now.

[00:12:31] I'd be an equipment manager for an NHL hockey team.

[00:12:34] Awesome.

[00:12:35] Like I literally want to be the skate sharpener.

[00:12:37] Like yeah there you go.

[00:12:38] I have a I have a skate sharpener.

[00:12:40] It brings me so much joy you guys.

[00:12:42] Like it I don't know what it is.

[00:12:44] It's it's an art.

[00:12:45] It's therapeutic.

[00:12:47] It's I'm by myself like I don't have to be around people.

[00:12:51] I can just take care of the stuff.

[00:12:53] So for me I'm like I would be a really kick ass

[00:12:56] equipment manager.

[00:12:57] I'd be great.

[00:12:57] You get to travel with the team right?

[00:12:59] Totally.

[00:12:59] I get to watch the games.

[00:13:00] I get to feel like I was a part of the team but

[00:13:02] right yeah that all the stress that I think one of the best jobs

[00:13:05] and sports is being the last man on the bench.

[00:13:08] I'm going to travel all over the United States.

[00:13:10] I'm going to watch all these games.

[00:13:12] You still get through when you get in the game.

[00:13:14] I'll get in the basketball game when there's a minute left

[00:13:16] and we're up by 50.

[00:13:19] I'll get a little bit of the play.

[00:13:20] 12th man huh?

[00:13:21] Yeah perfect.

[00:13:22] That's a great job.

[00:13:22] Perfect.

[00:13:23] Someone's got to write a book.

[00:13:25] The 12th man.

[00:13:26] Yeah.

[00:13:29] What do you get?

[00:13:30] Isn't that what force gump or not force gump?

[00:13:32] It's Rudy.

[00:13:33] Isn't that kind of like the walker?

[00:13:36] He's on the team.

[00:13:37] Well you're a humorous perspective.

[00:13:41] Like I really don't want to play it's you know in hockey it's the uh

[00:13:43] I don't want to play the e-bug.

[00:13:45] That's the that's the answer.

[00:13:46] I don't want to play.

[00:13:47] You want to get paid like a player.

[00:13:48] Yes.

[00:13:49] Fract is one of walks.

[00:13:50] Kevin I know this isn't baseball or football but are you familiar with the e-bug?

[00:13:53] No.

[00:13:54] The emergency backup gold tender in hockey the NHL.

[00:13:57] Oh okay.

[00:13:58] So it's literally like the Zamboni driver?

[00:14:00] Yeah yeah.

[00:14:01] Oh okay they just grab some guys.

[00:14:02] And like it's crazy out of the last like 10 years in the NHL

[00:14:05] they've had like three or four of them actually come in and actually get to play.

[00:14:08] So it's like I could also do that.

[00:14:10] Like be a Zamboni driver like I don't know.

[00:14:12] One of those would be good.

[00:14:13] The Zamboni fascinates me.

[00:14:15] All right let's actually talk about some dentistry here.

[00:14:18] Now that we've lost half our audience

[00:14:20] are they all dreaming about the other job they wanted?

[00:14:22] All the other things we could be doing.

[00:14:24] Dr. Tim Anderson from North Dakota

[00:14:27] please tell us what's new in the world of 3D printing

[00:14:30] and have re-reached 4D printing yet.

[00:14:33] Oh so

[00:14:35] Zach do you have a printer?

[00:14:36] I gotta go there first.

[00:14:37] Okay no

[00:14:38] and I have a

[00:14:40] No

[00:14:40] Maybe I gotta go back to this then.

[00:14:41] It is my next product.

[00:14:42] I had to buy a combing first.

[00:14:44] Okay I agree with that.

[00:14:44] I got that done.

[00:14:46] I got a sc...

[00:14:48] I'm on it here.

[00:14:49] You know this podcast has been very expensive for me.

[00:14:52] I got a scanner first.

[00:14:54] Then I had to buy...

[00:14:54] I was doing just fine with my PBS and my Alginate

[00:14:57] and you guys talked me into these

[00:14:59] and I gotta buy this scanner

[00:15:00] and then I gotta buy this CBCT

[00:15:03] which is great by the way.

[00:15:04] I'm genuinely enjoying using it

[00:15:07] and now you want me to buy a printer

[00:15:10] but on the expense side that's the least of the expenses though.

[00:15:12] I know that's the least expensive thing.

[00:15:15] So before you get into your field

[00:15:18] before you get into your field

[00:15:20] let's just answer the most basic question.

[00:15:23] Let's just say I'm a dude who wants to just

[00:15:26] print a model,

[00:15:28] print a buy guard

[00:15:30] maybe I'm thinking about printing a guide for an inflate

[00:15:32] but mostly just I want to print a study model

[00:15:35] and print a buy guard.

[00:15:36] What's my printer?

[00:15:37] What am I gonna buy right now?

[00:15:39] On a monobugget to him you know me

[00:15:41] I'm on a budget.

[00:15:42] I don't want to give me the...

[00:15:44] I don't want prime prints.

[00:15:45] I can't afford that.

[00:15:46] So I will actually...

[00:15:48] I hate it when people answer your questions with a question

[00:15:50] so I won't do that but I think ultimately

[00:15:53] it's not about which printer or the hardware.

[00:15:56] It's not about the hardware.

[00:15:57] It's ultimately about

[00:15:59] the software and who's utilizing the software.

[00:16:02] And...

[00:16:03] That's a fair point.

[00:16:04] I agree with that point.

[00:16:05] And early on

[00:16:06] I would advocate that you don't do the software.

[00:16:10] Don't change and uproot your workflows.

[00:16:12] So when I first got into printing

[00:16:15] I didn't want to reinvent the wheel.

[00:16:17] I didn't want to become the lab technician.

[00:16:18] Like that was a big component.

[00:16:20] Like I don't want to be the lab tech.

[00:16:21] I just want to have the capability

[00:16:24] to maybe turn around things quicker

[00:16:26] or have the ability to reproduce things

[00:16:29] more predictably in my own office.

[00:16:32] And so I leveraged my lab technicians

[00:16:35] for everything.

[00:16:36] My lab technicians design even to this day

[00:16:39] my lab technicians design a lot of my stuff

[00:16:41] but I needed the hardware to print that.

[00:16:44] So if you just want to have somebody else design

[00:16:48] and you're doing model work

[00:16:49] I would say just get any DLP printer.

[00:16:52] Now I am a big...

[00:16:55] What does that mean?

[00:16:56] I'm just dentists that thing.

[00:16:59] So DLP is...

[00:17:01] Think of a...

[00:17:01] There's three different kind of printers

[00:17:04] like the nozzle, squirt gun.

[00:17:06] You know, that's what you get at like Sam's Club Costco.

[00:17:09] Those aren't really for dentistry.

[00:17:10] And you've got your laser printers

[00:17:13] your SLA printers.

[00:17:14] Those use a laser light to cure it.

[00:17:16] That's what like the form labs was

[00:17:18] and the form debris in the form too.

[00:17:20] And then your DLP are your projector printers

[00:17:22] so it cures the entire layer in one cure cycle.

[00:17:26] So that...

[00:17:27] And that's where most the dental printers are

[00:17:29] because you can print more quickly.

[00:17:31] Time is a thing.

[00:17:33] So when I look at that,

[00:17:35] I always encourage people

[00:17:38] to invest in a system that is upgradable.

[00:17:40] Like when you're getting into anything

[00:17:42] and you know whether it's like...

[00:17:43] I don't know, Kevin, you guys are in your skis.

[00:17:44] Like when you buy a set of skis

[00:17:46] like if you just go for the cheapest set of skis

[00:17:49] and you just want to get into skiing.

[00:17:50] What happens?

[00:17:51] Yeah yeah.

[00:17:52] You buy a set of skis.

[00:17:53] You use it for half a season or a season

[00:17:55] then you have to buy a brand new set

[00:17:57] the next season.

[00:17:57] And so if you buy the least expensive printer

[00:18:00] to save costs because you're not sure about the technology

[00:18:03] I promise you it's going to cost you way more in the long run.

[00:18:05] So I would advocate to invest in dental focused companies.

[00:18:09] So in my world that's Sprint Ray.

[00:18:11] Like that, I just like that ecosystem.

[00:18:13] You mentioned Prime Print also a good ecosystem.

[00:18:16] Desktop Health also good ecosystem.

[00:18:18] Like there's all different types of ecosystem.

[00:18:20] You just want to ensure that these companies

[00:18:22] that you're going to be investing in

[00:18:24] are going to be around five years from now.

[00:18:27] That's true.

[00:18:28] And we've all been in the dental industry

[00:18:30] long enough to know that some companies last, some don't

[00:18:33] and so for me I look for a track record of who's doing that.

[00:18:36] So starting off just get a printer.

[00:18:40] Like, like form I would say desktop health form labs,

[00:18:44] Sprint Ray good options.

[00:18:46] Desktop Health still when I haven't heard of that you mentioned

[00:18:48] because I haven't actually shopped it yet

[00:18:50] because if I purchased it this year it's a third or fourth quarter.

[00:18:56] Yeah.

[00:18:56] So I don't, desktop health I'm not familiar with.

[00:18:58] The other ones I mean, those are the Einstein printers

[00:19:01] and next dent makes good printers

[00:19:04] and I mean this see good print like there's all sorts of printers.

[00:19:08] I think early on like somebody in your case

[00:19:11] Zach look at something that has a support structure.

[00:19:16] You know you look at, you know how I assess that.

[00:19:19] I don't know how to assess it.

[00:19:19] Look at Facebook.

[00:19:20] Like look at the Facebook groups of who's supporting

[00:19:22] that like is there a Facebook page dedicated to this printer

[00:19:25] thing within dentistry?

[00:19:26] You know is there what I like about Sprint Ray is it really is

[00:19:31] dentist focused and there you know there's plenty of support

[00:19:36] and it's able to do a lot of the things that you want to do as a dentist

[00:19:41] and that is really the only thing I know.

[00:19:43] I don't know any of these other printers at all.

[00:19:46] Yeah.

[00:19:46] But and to be honest, I mean Zach I've had

[00:19:49] you know five different printers

[00:19:50] and they all do great great things especially when you're dealing with model work

[00:19:55] so that the key is then you know you have a printer say you get a printer

[00:19:59] and now the biggest thing is utilizing and maximizing that technology.

[00:20:04] It's like your scanner your cone beam if your combing only sits there to take

[00:20:08] rate you know cone beams of rook and out therapy potential teeth

[00:20:11] missing the point.

[00:20:12] So having a printer you want to be able to use it so that means utilizing

[00:20:16] your scanner maximizing the technology already have

[00:20:19] and printing your base study models

[00:20:22] at which could be as easy as most printers now like you just scan it

[00:20:26] send it to the printing software and it will make a model for you

[00:20:29] like you don't have to do anything anymore.

[00:20:31] Most printing companies now like Sparrow has services that will make different

[00:20:36] applications for you whether that's a night guard whether that's

[00:20:40] you know bleaching tray models whether that's a diagnostic duplicate of a

[00:20:44] denture whatever might be or I would advocate just use your lab.

[00:20:50] Oh and I do I have been I have I have made that that change where I am

[00:20:56] using Alginate less often and I am

[00:20:59] you know scanning and having the lab make make up you know print the model send it to me

[00:21:04] they are the weak turnaround those sucks like I like that's where I'm like

[00:21:10] man I want this thing now you know so that's that's what's intrigued me you know.

[00:21:15] And that's sure it opens like we start looking at how people make decisions these days as

[00:21:20] patients and yeah the world we live in of like you know missed opportunity I mean we live

[00:21:25] in a generation where people want to know and so having the capability to like do it and turn

[00:21:31] around quickly is is you know appealing to a lot of people in a lot of practices.

[00:21:36] And so for me like that that that was huge for me because I'm a procrastinator so I was

[00:21:41] constantly the one like oh we're going to reschedule the patient because the lab didn't do this aka

[00:21:46] Tim didn't send it to the lab in time right so for me having the the capability to do things in

[00:21:52] house has really opened up a lot of doors and is honestly allowed me to expand my scope of

[00:21:58] services quicker than I ever would have been able to and it sure but it didn't start that way

[00:22:03] it started with just models. And you see the printing companies do this I don't know like

[00:22:08] have you guys seen the the new thing on social media the what is it night guard dot com

[00:22:16] no where you can okay I think I have yeah so I was like I was like I was like a like

[00:22:22] a smile direct club like when under right so then I was like I was like so all of a sudden this

[00:22:26] night guard dot com pops up and it's got the same purple and the same like yeah I'm like what the heck

[00:22:32] but then I'm looking at the photos and like I recognize these photos so night guard dot com is a

[00:22:38] service that you send in your scans pick the design they 3d print it ship it to you in 48 hours

[00:22:46] oh so it's it's for dentists it's not for no it's not for patients yeah do you know who owns

[00:22:52] night guard dot com whose website it actually is.

[00:22:56] Are you spreading tell me it's smell direct?

[00:22:57] spread so spread spread raise now seeing that beyond and to me this was a good example of a company

[00:23:05] that's focused on the industry not just hardware or just resin they're looking at the bigger picture

[00:23:11] of like trying to capitalize on bigger market chairs and realizing that not all dentists are the

[00:23:16] same so the technology is still the important factor that's why our labs are 3d printing it the

[00:23:23] technology is a better technology than the traditional method from a cost efficiency and product

[00:23:30] predictability so whether you want to do it in office or not these companies are crumbling out

[00:23:35] with solutions that you know say Zach you don't want to do anything but you want a 3d print

[00:23:39] night guard with a quick turnaround well now you have a solution if say you want I didn't yeah

[00:23:44] I didn't know about that so that's yeah this goes back to what we just talked about on the

[00:23:47] previous podcast I'm learning as as we're doing the show here I'm not delivering knowledge I'm

[00:23:52] just taking it and I think it's intriguing to see like where all these things are going because now

[00:23:56] there's different avenues for different people now you start mixing you know artificial intelligence

[00:24:01] and design things like all of these things just get crazy on what is possible

[00:24:08] what midwinter is just come finished right yeah right yeah I'm trying to do what is is coming out

[00:24:14] technically so midwinter yes the 27th so spring is debuting a bunch of new things but one of the

[00:24:20] things that I found most intriguing was the new AI 2.0 with regards to night guards and how

[00:24:26] the AI technologies are getting to the point where like my my assistance design my night guards but

[00:24:32] it takes them five minutes well now if I can have a computer do it in five and I don't need to

[00:24:36] them do it they get a similar result now all of a sudden this becomes a little bit more appealing

[00:24:40] to me sure so it's just looking at all these different solutions and the technology is moving so

[00:24:45] fast that it's so exciting to be in the field but ultimately what what kind of frustrates me which

[00:24:53] is why I love teaching 3d printing is that we try to keep things really simple 3d Dennis and

[00:24:59] create simple workflows that are team driven and so much of 3d printing you know the hot topics are

[00:25:05] in you know all in x provisionalization veneers definitive restorations full dentures like

[00:25:14] all of these prosthetics that are really cool and really fancy but ultimately when you look at

[00:25:20] the scope of my practice and most practices that's not the bulk of the volume of what they're going to

[00:25:25] be doing I the bulk of what I do are models a ton of models surgical guides and night guards like

[00:25:33] say that is that is the bulk of my workflow yes I do some trial smiles and some dentures and some

[00:25:38] hybrids and stuff like that but ultimately the bulk of the foundation of my workflow is model work

[00:25:44] and so I want a solution that allows me to create models that allow me to enhance my workflow

[00:25:50] and I think that's where we start getting to this world of just it's so much fun um to be moving forward

[00:25:56] and so like with 3d we've kind of moved away and we kind of try to rebrand some of our

[00:26:02] our structure in way we wanted to look at teaching digital dentistry continuance because 3d printing is

[00:26:09] really just a component of the 3d workflow and whether that's your interval scanner your cone

[00:26:15] beam it's a component to allow you to live in a digital ecosystem and maximize that and so

[00:26:22] I am excited because rather than just doing a 3d printing course now we're doing it's it's advanced

[00:26:27] 3d printing in 3d smile design and denture design because those two are very very similar concepts

[00:26:33] and then advanced 3d printing and implants so that's like a single tooth implant guide multiple

[00:26:38] unit implant guide bridge guides provisionalization healing above ends all of those types of things so

[00:26:44] it we're starting to move beyond um just the simple basics but the core basics are the foundation

[00:26:52] that makes all of this work like I mean Kevin you see I mean it's it's the foundation of

[00:26:57] like if all my printer could do was just models act that's all I'd still have a printer

[00:27:01] it's still yeah and see that's that's the people and if my lab could somehow maybe I

[00:27:07] maybe it's my lab and maybe I need to try a different lab out but if I could get it back in

[00:27:12] like two days I probably wouldn't even be looking for one but you know that's kind of they just

[00:27:18] it takes so long to get it back to me and and and Kevin's iPhone

[00:27:21] want it now practice thing has definitely spoke to me when someone comes in and they've got some

[00:27:25] job paint and they want a bike guard they don't want it next week they want it yeah in two days you

[00:27:31] know if they want tomorrow and that had that had said thing with whitening trays

[00:27:36] they don't want the whitening they don't want to start it in 10 days they want to start it

[00:27:40] tomorrow you know and my petitions area were with so cool that you can like every every

[00:27:47] aesthetic case we deliver whether it's vineyards or crowns were to be able to scan them at delivery

[00:27:52] in the morning and then have them come back after lunch and have a custom 3d printed

[00:27:57] occlusal orthotic or nice splint for them sure that I mean it's this it changes the way they

[00:28:03] look at your practice which makes you seem pretty cool to them it does and for me it

[00:28:09] it makes my world so much easier like for me like and and my I loved it right away but where

[00:28:15] I've seen it explode in my practice as my team like if my I was asking one of my assistants the other

[00:28:22] day because I mean like everywhere you know assistance and everything is in shortage but

[00:28:27] I told her I'm like man you could work anywhere in this community you know that right she goes yep

[00:28:31] but I'm like but and she learned a word she's like yeah but I don't get to do any of this like

[00:28:36] I don't get to do any of the design I don't get to do any 3d printing I don't get to design crowns

[00:28:40] I don't get to do any of this all I get to do is suck spit and so to see their fulfillment within

[00:28:46] their career has been really impactful for me with rationalizing like the true value everybody

[00:28:54] looks at ROI is like a dollar per model it's really the opportunities for integration within your

[00:29:01] team and your whole ecosystem within your practice that really drive the value for this technology

[00:29:07] and then you compound it with like it's really not that expensive in the dental world

[00:29:12] you're really talking about next level sort of business principles there that you're leveraging

[00:29:18] the time involved but you're also in a way at least in my office who are creating a career I have

[00:29:25] someone that just 3d prints and you know and then also leveraging the time of getting stuff back

[00:29:34] for your patients and you know if anyone's listening to this rewind you know 3 or 4 minutes

[00:29:42] and listen to what Tim said again because that's really where all the value is it's not just the

[00:29:47] dollars it's everything else that he said too and that was not something initially I went in it

[00:29:54] like a lot of things in life I went into it thinking one thing and then once I actually got it

[00:29:58] all these other things followed and it's just getting quicker with the AI stuff that's the

[00:30:05] integer part yeah the learning curve is not what it used to be I mean there is a learning curve

[00:30:11] but it really is reflective of the scope of what you want to do with it is ultimately I mean you don't

[00:30:16] need exocad and labs software and all this stuff that gets really overwhelming you literally I

[00:30:21] mean with what you already have Zach like you could crush it with a cone beam and a

[00:30:26] enteral scanner and 3d printing I mean like you can do everything with that

[00:30:31] I'm learning that kind of more and more which is why you know I for the first time I've really

[00:30:40] really thought you know if I could get the turnaround if I could do it myself I could get this stuff

[00:30:45] myself and have that like kind of good experience of like wow you know we scanned this it was no

[00:30:51] gooping your mouth and boom we got your night guard and you got it that you know the next day

[00:30:55] or you got your bleaching trays the next day whatever it is I feel like that would be a wow factor

[00:31:01] that you know also can drive people to make more referrals to your office and whatnot you've got

[00:31:06] something that other people might not have yeah that's a cool thing and I think you so you did

[00:31:11] you just answered one of my favorite things when when I look at technology and one of the things that

[00:31:16] well really T-bone kind of hammered into me was like anytime you're looking at technology

[00:31:21] you know what problem are you trying to solve and I think you articulated that very clearly

[00:31:26] of what problems you're trying to solve then the the follow question is well what is the barrier

[00:31:33] to allowing me to provide the best possible care to my patients and I think that's that's the

[00:31:38] the question that a lot of people kind of skirt I think the default one for a lot of clinicians is

[00:31:44] money which that's not really a driving but you're right though of all the things I've bought

[00:31:49] that would be the least expensive thing but it's still I mean it's it's still a chunk oh yeah

[00:31:54] you know for sure and you got to do some you gotta set it up it's money and there's a learning time

[00:31:59] and this is the way we've always done it and you're comfortable with that but sure the new way

[00:32:04] is definitely more efficient and no question yeah so I you get you get you get you get a little more

[00:32:12] wow when you scans on the bike guards have then where I scanned them for it and sent it out

[00:32:18] and then showed them their 3d printed models even though I don't have the printer the lab

[00:32:21] printed them but that was that was cool to them you know for sure yeah Kevin you asked that the

[00:32:27] new the new things like AI being a huge component what's coming out um the what's really fascinating

[00:32:33] to me right now is the materials like there are some pretty sick materials coming out um specifically

[00:32:41] in the like the denture space the the new tenture resins and denture teeth like man these things

[00:32:49] polish like spurt rays new apex denture tooth material we've been using that for a while that stuff

[00:32:57] is man that's sexy it polish is really nice yeah so it's really helped my workflow uh some of

[00:33:03] the new night night guard materials I mean it's just like these resins just get so much better to

[00:33:07] the point where I'm like it keeps closing the gap for you know how I use the materials do I think

[00:33:15] milling or pressing ceramics will ever go away I I not my career I really don't envision that but um

[00:33:22] because I think there's a place for all of it yeah I'm not really looking you know for printing

[00:33:27] restorations at this point I don't I don't think we're exactly there but everything up into that

[00:33:32] point like just to turn around and the efficiency and again some of the aesthetics that you can get

[00:33:38] out of this material or durability that you can get out of some of these materials is is amazing

[00:33:43] I tell you what though I bet if Timmerized kids became a dentist I bet you they'd be three

[00:33:48] reprinting final crowns that are strong enough to play to play ball but I agree it's not going

[00:33:53] to happen in my career or Kevin's career yeah yeah I don't think it's gonna be there there'll be a hologram

[00:34:00] okay well I see I want to try that new Apple Vision Pro and see how what I can do with that right

[00:34:07] what are we talking about now that's the vision pro you know no I'm sorry I'm sorry we need a

[00:34:13] whole episode on that but it's a paragoggle I can send you like the paragogles and you have basically

[00:34:18] your screen out in front of you in space you have not seen okay yeah you know I I don't know

[00:34:25] I just haven't seen it exactly my wife no my wife told me I'm not allowed to get one because it

[00:34:28] would once again ruin our marriage so yeah she's like you'll you'll sit there in the couch and never

[00:34:35] communicate with your kids or me again just wear those stupid glasses so but I think it's it's very

[00:34:41] intriguing the whole spatial thing waiting for this thing to come out for months and months and there

[00:34:45] was a little bit of a tease a couple weeks ago so I sent the link to all my team and Thursday is now

[00:34:52] I'm an admin person I don't see patients on Thursday so I told Megan my one hygienist I'm gonna

[00:34:58] put my Apple Vision Pro and just walk around the office doing this and for those who can't see me

[00:35:02] I'm just doing gestures in front of is this like is this like Iron Man stuff like you know

[00:35:09] exactly I'm envisioning like all of us hanging out like you guys can teach me how to ski

[00:35:13] I'll teach you how to print you guys teach me how to ski and what we can be on the slopes doing

[00:35:17] dentistry through our Apple Vision Pro while their patients in our office like there's all sorts of

[00:35:23] cool stuff this is seat and gold here yeah it's perfect level wow okay yeah all right now now you

[00:35:30] you got me so I like how we sold I was sold Zach on a Apple Vision Pro but we're struggling on the

[00:35:36] printer I know I'm genuinely considering the printer although you said plenty of things of like

[00:35:42] you know there's you know maybe a different lab get the models back faster maybe I should try to
