[00:00:01] This is a production of the Very Dental Podcast Network. Welcome to the Very Clinical Podcast. In about the time it takes to do an MO on three, we will entertain and amaze you with tips and tricks on regular daily dentistry. Here's Kevin and Zach.

[00:00:28] What is up Very Clinical listeners and welcome back to another episode of the podcast. This is Zach Miners coming to you from Kansas City, Missouri. With me as always my trusty co-host Dr. Kevin, hair friar. Kevin, what's cracking in Cleveland?

[00:00:43] Well, I'm a little bummed and I'm a little bit excited. Okay. So the AG2 contract has run out. Oh, Alan screwed it up. But we are now being sponsored by AG3. Ah, good. Which is two better. Okay, that's great. Is it not even green? It's like yellow or

[00:01:03] something like that or blue? It's so green. It's never been greener. Okay. All right. So AG3 is gonna bring us the green green in. Yes. So we should see that money rolling in soon. I'm very excited. Can't wait. Third level multi marketing. We're 3xing it.

[00:01:22] 3x. That's great. I can't wait. Can't wait for the upgrade. As promised from last week, we are bringing back Dr. Craig Harder from Washington. Craig, what's happening tonight? Hey, guys. Just got a new dog that I'm waiting to go back and

[00:01:38] see how he's doing. He's Oliver named Ollie for short. Yellow Lab. He's five days without a pee mistake in the house. So I'm pretty excited. Hopefully he made it again today. We'll see. He's made it out the dog door. He's 12 weeks old now.

[00:01:55] All right. Very cool. That's fun. It's been five days? Yeah. Do you have one of those signs? It's been five days. I yeah, we we took it down every day. Add on. Yep. So we're having to go you know, a whole week. We'll see. How many dogs?

[00:02:12] That makes number three. We used to have nine. Wait, I wait. I need to ask you. Yeah. You used to have nine. We had nine dogs at one time. That was crazy. God, that's Yeah, we had nine dogs, six chickens, chameleon and five resources.

[00:02:29] So Wow. And a big vet bill. Yeah, yeah. Yes. That all in 2010 when the economy was great was a good time to have nice and done Craig. Wow. Horses that spend money. And a Biolase laser. Yeah, yeah. We're considering getting a third dog but I'm worried you

[00:02:53] know, the logistics of the third dog there is there's some downside. This was very much a fly by the seat of my pants. Wife said yes. So all of a sudden I'm on the road to Oregon to buy the dog. Probably a dumb mistake. I

[00:03:07] always tell my friends kids to you know, stop it having two kids because when you have a third you got to get a bigger car and all that. Well, same with dogs. You can't put three of them all in the same kennel. That's too much. You got all

[00:03:20] kinds of things. So we'll see how it goes. But so far he's been great. Was it any difficulty introducing Ali to the rest of the pack? I've heard that as a problem with a third dog. So our dogs that we've got a rescue mutt that he's almost 14

[00:03:36] and he was not been too happy. He really thought it was just a guest in the house because yes, babysit sometimes for other people's dogs and he thought this is just a guess he could ignore it but now he's realized that it's part of the family

[00:03:48] and he's not very happy. Our second dog is a almost three year old black lab who is just excited as hell to have a new prison cellmate that he can maybe rape and enjoy and how around with anyone who's ever seen any of my lectures knows

[00:04:06] about dog rape, but that's another stick a turn I didn't expect Wow. Hey, anything can happen on this podcast? Yeah, I mean, I got it the first time the term dog rape has been used. People at age three are going to

[00:04:20] cancel us for Yeah, I apologize. It was so short. Wow. Yeah. But the black lab has been a great big brother though. He's teaching in the ropes. He asked him to the chickens that we've got out back and I love that it's pretty funny to watch the

[00:04:34] chickens not like the new Oliver but how much land are you on Craig? We've got an acre and a half. That's a good size good size piece of land. Nice. It's just right for me. I you know,

[00:04:46] did I although I would I take 40 acres or an acre and a half. Gotcha. Gotcha. All right, Kevin. What? Let's see we have a bit or a topic. That was it. So we have that was the bit. It was a spontaneous dog talk. Okay, I like awesome. Awesome.

[00:05:05] Craig, have you changed your mind in any any way on on life in general? Several years? Yeah, just a little bit. I growing up I was one of those kids that was always active in sports. So I did basketball, football, track, baseball, whatever, soccer, and I was the

[00:05:27] six to skinny kid who never had to worry about gaining weight. When I was in my 30s. If I said I wanted to lose 10 pounds, it was gone in three days and I didn't actually do anything different. Just was pretty lucky. But something happened

[00:05:41] and I know it's testosterone or something gone away. But when I got to my 40s, all of a sudden, everything hurt. And I started gaining weight and all those things and I didn't do much about it. I got a little busy. I started trying to play more

[00:05:56] sports and getting out and hiking and doing things just avoiding whatever I could the weight room that I despise growing up. But that's what I've changed now. And I kind of feel like a CrossFit evangelist or something. I'm not doing

[00:06:10] CrossFit, but I am doing this kind of the power lifting mode of progressive overload, trying to increase my weights. And I'm doing I've reached my goals wanted to be able to bench and squat my weight and do 100 pounds more than my weight in

[00:06:29] deadlift. And I've reached that. That's awesome. Those are way bigger numbers than I ever did in high school when I was actually an athlete. And so it's been it's been good. My back and my knees don't hurt anymore. I feel much better.

[00:06:44] That's the crazy thing. Doing deadlifts 300 pounds is a big deadlift, Craig. Nice. How long did it take you to get to that goal? About four months. And it was one day. One day we're all sudden I realized my knees don't hurt, which I always heard

[00:07:02] getting out of bed or whatever. And my back doesn't hurt. After a day of doing dentistry. I mean, I can still sneeze and blow something out. We tied up for a few days. But that's just being old. But yeah, yeah, I'm sold on the idea that we all

[00:07:20] need to be doing strength training. Yes. With barbells. Yep. I love the memes on Facebook of what white women will do to act like they're exercising. You know, I'm not going to do some of those crazy things. I just get down and do

[00:07:38] some overhead press and bench press and chin ups and pull ups and do those. It's all great stuff. Down and dirty. The basic things that yeah, our PE teachers were telling us to do back in junior high. And yeah, it is it's working for me. And

[00:07:56] my goal is that I want to be you know, holding grandchildren, great grandchildren without any pain when I'm 85 or I want to be able to go on hikes and go hunting still when I'm in my 70s. All those things that I enjoy now and I hate the thought

[00:08:14] of not being able to jump just because I didn't prepare myself. So this is very much on brand if you listen to our podcast. And so you know, listeners will know that Zach and I both are working out and doing some some strength stuff. And it's definitely

[00:08:30] changed our physical health. And I would ask Craig, what about your mental health? Yeah, that's definitely good. I've got plenty of stress going on with things in life, in general business and my daughter and her health is always an issue. And so getting to the gym,

[00:08:49] even though I despise a lot of the people in the culture of the gym, wait, getting Wait, what do you despise? Because I know we're gonna say the same thing. We Yeah, I despise the people who are doing outlandish crazy lifts

[00:09:06] in front of the mirror with barbells thinking they're actually accomplishing something other than watching themselves. With recording it? Yes, exactly. Or the all the women lined up, you know, the place I go to has four setups for bench and squat racks. And

[00:09:27] usually three of them will be filled with women doing hip thrusts to get bigger booty, which is fine. But my gosh, do some other things too. Or I there's a new thing I've discovered that there's an inverse relationship between the

[00:09:41] size of the water bottle and the work that people actually do. Ah, that's a good one. So um, I got I got okay, so I'll tell you what's annoying is the people recording themselves these days. The videoing themselves. Yeah, I can't. That's the I will. I will

[00:10:03] say there's one reason for it. And my my daughter is the one who actually got me into the powerlifting side. Right. Ever met my daughter when she was young. She weighed 98 pounds at 14. She has cystic fibrosis. She really struggles to put on

[00:10:18] weight. Well, she got into powerlifting and this chick can deadlift 265 pounds. That's amazing. She can squat 135. She's super strong. And what she does though is she goes to a gym and she will record herself but it's because she has a coach.

[00:10:35] Yeah. Oh, for yeah, that's different form and all that. So I can see that but yeah, different but but but those Okay, so I have also seen two different people videoing. I've seen the person that's clearly checking form and then the

[00:10:50] person that's like Instagram living there. Yeah, you know their their exercise for their for their for their influence. You know, yeah, that's a different person altogether. One is gross. The other is you know, that's great. Yeah, it's

[00:11:03] I mean, yeah, for sure. As as a as the gym culture ever made you want to, you know, install some stuff at your house to do for sure. For sure. And maybe someday. Yeah, I'm my wife and

[00:11:20] her kind of pack rat. So we've got a full garage. Okay, gotcha. I'd have to clear out. We've got a pool house that is just the perfect spot for it really. So I might start slowly working on that. So Craig, you mentioned obviously some of the like most

[00:11:37] core, basic good quality lifts with with, you know, bench squat deadlift and all that. What? What got you to do that? Or what? How did you develop your program of what you're doing versus? I don't know anything else, you know,

[00:11:56] so watching my daughter and seeing that she was having good success from having a coach and that city were pre programming her lifts for a week ahead. Okay. And so I started finding out more of what where she was getting the information from and

[00:12:13] what a coach knew and stuff and, and it comes from the starting think starting strength group. It's called okay, you can find their videos on Facebook or on YouTube. And I picked up a book that it's about gaining strength for people over 40 basically.

[00:12:32] Okay. And so been doing a bunch of stuff and there's a bunch of technique things in there. It's, it's way deep down the rabbit hole of why you should get fit and how it works and all these things. But the basic idea of stress your body, then recover

[00:12:48] and you'll adapt them to be able to do more. So that activity afterwards relates well for me, I can see it. It's going now I'm not looking like some buffed guy by any means, although that's not the goal. Right? The goal is what you said earlier

[00:13:06] that you can hunt when you're 70 you can hold your grandkids, you can be functional. I was talking to a patient about all of this couple weeks ago. And one of the things she said is stuck in my

[00:13:20] head was that we have so much more information now it's it would be a tragedy not to be able to do that. Yeah. All that information is readily available to us. You know, free or free. Yeah, yeah. And you know, Zach, I know you feel

[00:13:39] stronger, you feel better. I feel stronger. I feel and Craig saying the same thing. Yeah, it's well doing it. So to be functional as a super senior citizen. What what Craig said was as was my experience to an absolute T is like, okay, all of

[00:13:59] a sudden, I got my back stronger, I got my legs stronger. And I'm doing a little different program than what Craig's talking about. But I still do some of those same things. I have a squat move that I do and I have a deadlift that

[00:14:11] I do. And it just allows you like I said, the quadrant of composites now that would have left me probably feeling like I needed a massage now is not not a problem. You know, we're moving some furniture. I don't fear like, Oh, God, I moved some

[00:14:27] furniture, my back is going to be shot the rest of the week. That and so it's just it's life functioning stuff. And you know, if we were living a different lifestyle, we might not need that. But as dentists, we spend a lot of time on our ass. Yeah,

[00:14:42] you know, at the at the office, paperwork, this, that and so you have to offset that with with extra extra work. It's like you're working to do your sport dentistry and paperwork and stuff like that. Last last summer, my mom moved into a retirement village place

[00:15:01] and after so many years, she sold her house and she wanted to make it easy for us kids so that she's now living in a condo type thing. And then as her health deteriorates, she can move into

[00:15:11] an apartment in the building. And then into full all time care after that. So it's just a process which Yep. Okay, great. This is awesome moment. But I went to dinner with her the first couple of nights. And you walk into those places and even

[00:15:28] the folks who are not living in the apartments or anything, they're just in the condos. So many of them are pushing a walker. Yeah. And, you know, I started having a little contest with my mom with guess their age. And yeah, some of them were

[00:15:43] in their 60s. And so that's the thing like something you said at the beginning, Craig, though, it's it's like, you have to have that mindset. Like we've, we've talked before on the podcast, and Zach and I've talked privately, I'm fighting this. Like I want

[00:16:00] to be that spry 75 year old that can still do whatever I want to do. But it started up here like I had to have a mental plan of it. And as we mentioned, there's so much free stuff out there. It's, you know,

[00:16:16] shame. I think my big fear right now is is the, you can see success and you can keep getting stronger and stronger. At some point, that's going to go the other right. And maintaining the motivation to continue to work out and to be

[00:16:33] busy doing things outside and staying active and walking whatever it's going to take that works for you. That motivation is going to be the tough thing to find. So I'm trying as hard as I can to set that ingrained in my head now.

[00:16:48] But if you didn't do it now, you going to visit your mom and seeing those people and not wanting to be one of them that there's your motivation right there. You know, I mean, and I don't know, did you read the Peter Atiyah Outlive book? Craig, is that?

[00:17:04] I have not. No. Okay, well, you got to read that if you ever want to be on the podcast again. Okay. And also, is that is that when the AG4 money kicks in? Yes, that's when the AG4 money kicks in.

[00:17:15] Yeah, well, AG3 will get you so far but AG4 will push you over the edge. And you'll live, you'll never die. Okay. You'll live eternally. But exactly what Craig said, though, you have to build that muscle up now. Yes. Because inevitably, there's going to be a decline. It's

[00:17:32] better to start from here rather than to start from, you know, somewhere where you can't gain anymore, you know, so and the other benefits of just feeling better and not like a slug. And also, like, I know this is gonna sound weird, but

[00:17:46] the time I spend working out, it's like me time. Like, oh, that's true. Yeah, no one just bothers me. Yeah. And you guys just work out at home. Just for the record, just for the record, you guys are in my

[00:17:59] workout time right now. So I'm a little pissed off. Oof. Oof. You're right. It's 3D5, you don't need to work out. So yeah, I'll have to work out tomorrow instead. Hey, all right. All right. Very good. Craig, anything else? Or is that kind of your main thing?

[00:18:14] That's a big one. No, I think that's it is. I've always been active. But now my mindset is I want to be I don't want to die from something that could have prevented. Yes. And so that's my long term goal in life. And it's a pretty

[00:18:32] simple one, but it covers a lot. Yeah, I was gonna say that sometimes simple matters the most though. I mean, that's that still works. That's a good goal. And you should read that book though. You gotta read that book. Everything you've said, you would dig that book.

[00:18:44] Yeah. Okay. It's like you've written the book. Yeah, exactly. You're following the book. Thank you. I maybe slept near it. So it was osmosis. Thanks for joining us and using your workout time on Yapping with Us. We appreciate it.

[00:19:00] I appreciate you guys having me on. It's always good to chat with you. Kevin, any final thoughts? Double downs? Apologies? Just drink up some more AG3 so I can get some more LT3. Thank you guys for listening. If you want to hear more talk more

[00:19:17] about this, check out the Very Clinical Facebook page. Craig's on there if you need to ask him a question about dogs or workouts or how not to buy horses. Fiber posts. Yes. Yeah. All of the above. All right. Thank you guys for listening and we will see you

[00:19:36] next Tuesday.
