[00:01:13] [SPEAKER_01]: So turning great.
[00:01:15] [SPEAKER_01]: We've got a lake by us, a great lake.
[00:01:18] [SPEAKER_01]: What do you got?
[00:01:20] [SPEAKER_04]: A river.
[00:01:21] [SPEAKER_04]: The Missouri River?
[00:01:22] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, okay.
[00:01:25] [SPEAKER_04]: Is that good?
[00:01:26] [SPEAKER_04]: I don't even know.
[00:01:27] [SPEAKER_04]: It's not good, I think.
[00:01:28] [SPEAKER_04]: I think it's pretty good.
[00:01:29] [SPEAKER_04]: All right.
[00:01:29] [SPEAKER_04]: Very good.
[00:01:30] [SPEAKER_04]: As promised, we have Dr. Melissa Zettler returning all the way from Minnesota.
[00:01:35] [SPEAKER_04]: Melissa, what is up?
[00:01:37] [SPEAKER_00]: Not much.
[00:01:38] [SPEAKER_00]: We don't have the mighty Missouri, but we have the mighty Mississippi.
[00:01:41] [SPEAKER_04]: Well, you do.
[00:01:42] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, that's on the other side of Missouri.
[00:01:44] [SPEAKER_04]: Nice body of water.
[00:01:45] [SPEAKER_04]: Yep.
[00:01:45] [SPEAKER_01]: I dig it.
[00:01:48] [SPEAKER_01]: Kevin, did you?
[00:01:48] [SPEAKER_01]: Let's just not talk about dentistry at all.
[00:01:50] [SPEAKER_01]: We're just going to talk about random bodies of water.
[00:01:52] [SPEAKER_04]: Rivers, random rivers.
[00:01:53] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:01:55] [SPEAKER_04]: Kevin, did you do anything fun this summer?
[00:01:58] [SPEAKER_04]: It's kind of the end that we're recording this just after Labor Day weekend.
[00:02:01] [SPEAKER_04]: Kevin, did you do anything fun this summer?
[00:02:03] [SPEAKER_04]: Did you have a highlight?
[00:02:04] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we had the highlight was the trip to Croatia.
[00:02:06] [SPEAKER_01]: We went to Croatia for two weeks with my wife, Missy and her dad and his wife and my son
[00:02:13] [SPEAKER_01]: and his fiance.
[00:02:14] [SPEAKER_01]: And we started in Dubivnik and went all the way up the coast.
[00:02:19] [SPEAKER_01]: And like I said, I've said this numerous times.
[00:02:23] [SPEAKER_01]: Every day was a new adventure.
[00:02:26] [SPEAKER_01]: And I think it changed me a little bit.
[00:02:29] [SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
[00:02:30] [SPEAKER_04]: Was there one highlight?
[00:02:31] [SPEAKER_04]: Was there one big moment?
[00:02:33] [SPEAKER_04]: One highlight.
[00:02:33] [SPEAKER_01]: Well, yeah.
[00:02:35] [SPEAKER_01]: The highlight.
[00:02:35] [SPEAKER_01]: This is a highlight.
[00:02:37] [SPEAKER_01]: So, Missy's dad's from Croatia.
[00:02:40] [SPEAKER_01]: We went to his boyhood home.
[00:02:42] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, wow.
[00:02:42] [SPEAKER_01]: And the river that he used to play in, speaking of rivers.
[00:02:46] [SPEAKER_04]: Yes, B.
[00:02:47] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:02:48] [SPEAKER_01]: The Korona.
[00:02:50] [SPEAKER_01]: That's what it's called, the Korona.
[00:02:54] [SPEAKER_01]: And currently in that area there's a guy that owns an Airbnb and he cooked us a
[00:03:02] [SPEAKER_01]: traditional Croatian meal.
[00:03:04] [SPEAKER_01]: He roasted a pig on a spit and everything and vegetables from his garden.
[00:03:10] [SPEAKER_01]: And it was like, that's not something that anyone could do.
[00:03:15] [SPEAKER_04]: No, that's an authentic experience for sure.
[00:03:17] [SPEAKER_04]: It was pretty awesome.
[00:03:19] [SPEAKER_04]: What about you, Melissa?
[00:03:21] [SPEAKER_04]: Did you have any, did you do anything fun this summer outside of Savage, Minnesota?
[00:03:27] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[00:03:27] [SPEAKER_00]: So we pretty much go up to our lake house every weekend.
[00:03:31] [SPEAKER_00]: And so that's what we did and got a little bit better at surfing, did a little pal boarding,
[00:03:37] [SPEAKER_00]: played pickleball.
[00:03:38] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, your boat or okay, right on.
[00:03:39] [SPEAKER_04]: What lake do you go to?
[00:03:41] [SPEAKER_00]: It is called Marion Lake and it is in Purim.
[00:03:44] [SPEAKER_00]: It's about an hour out of, hour and a half out of Fargo.
[00:03:47] [SPEAKER_00]: So in the northwestern part of the state by Detroit Lakes is the bigger city people
[00:03:54] [SPEAKER_00]: heard of.
[00:03:55] [SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
[00:03:55] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[00:03:55] [SPEAKER_00]: You'll float around and watch the loons.
[00:03:57] [SPEAKER_00]: You know you're old when you start birdwatching.
[00:03:59] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:04:00] [SPEAKER_00]: So, yeah.
[00:04:01] [SPEAKER_04]: What type of surf boat do you guys have?
[00:04:04] [SPEAKER_00]: We have a Malibu wake setter.
[00:04:06] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, it's a beautiful boat.
[00:04:08] [SPEAKER_04]: Fantastic.
[00:04:10] [SPEAKER_04]: The surfing is fun.
[00:04:12] [SPEAKER_04]: We're big boaters here, but my boat does not the surfing type.
[00:04:16] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm a kneeboard, wakeboard skier type.
[00:04:19] [SPEAKER_04]: But I love the surfing.
[00:04:20] [SPEAKER_04]: It's fun stuff.
[00:04:22] [SPEAKER_04]: It is.
[00:04:23] [SPEAKER_00]: It's just fun to be on the water.
[00:04:25] [SPEAKER_04]: Yes.
[00:04:25] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, very relaxing.
[00:04:27] [SPEAKER_04]: And it's a great family activity too.
[00:04:29] [SPEAKER_04]: Like everyone's captivated when they're on the boat.
[00:04:31] [SPEAKER_04]: That's for sure.
[00:04:33] [SPEAKER_04]: We did the Grand Canyon, Kevin.
[00:04:35] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh yeah.
[00:04:36] [SPEAKER_04]: That was our big, we did the Grand Canyon, Sedona, Phoenix and my kids had never done a national,
[00:04:43] [SPEAKER_04]: this was our first national part trip.
[00:04:45] [SPEAKER_04]: We'd done like plenty of other trips.
[00:04:47] [SPEAKER_04]: This is our first national part trip.
[00:04:48] [SPEAKER_04]: We didn't know how they do on just a sightseeing trip.
[00:04:51] [SPEAKER_04]: It was a big hit.
[00:04:51] [SPEAKER_04]: They loved it.
[00:04:54] [SPEAKER_01]: Didn't your, when your kids say something about the Grand Canyon, like this was the greatest
[00:04:57] [SPEAKER_01]: something or other?
[00:04:59] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh shoot.
[00:05:01] [SPEAKER_00]: Did you hike in the row?
[00:05:03] [SPEAKER_04]: Huh?
[00:05:05] [SPEAKER_04]: We didn't hike.
[00:05:06] [SPEAKER_04]: No, they're 10 and nine.
[00:05:08] [SPEAKER_04]: So that hike was, we just did the rim hikes up around it.
[00:05:13] [SPEAKER_04]: I would like to do that full hike one of these days.
[00:05:16] [SPEAKER_04]: Also, I would not pick June to do that hike.
[00:05:18] [SPEAKER_04]: I would go in like the spring or the fall or something like that.
[00:05:22] [SPEAKER_04]: Too hot?
[00:05:23] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh yeah.
[00:05:24] [SPEAKER_04]: Okay.
[00:05:25] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh yeah, too hot for sure.
[00:05:26] [SPEAKER_04]: For sure.
[00:05:27] [SPEAKER_04]: I can't remember what my kids said now though.
[00:05:29] [SPEAKER_01]: I think they said something like this was the greatest thing we've ever done.
[00:05:31] [SPEAKER_04]: Greatest hole in the ground or something like that.
[00:05:33] [SPEAKER_04]: I don't know what they said.
[00:05:34] [SPEAKER_01]: That's one big hole.
[00:05:35] [SPEAKER_04]: That's one big hole.
[00:05:38] [SPEAKER_04]: All right.
[00:05:40] [SPEAKER_04]: I'll have to think of what they said.
[00:05:41] [SPEAKER_04]: Now I can't remember.
[00:05:41] [SPEAKER_01]: I remember you messaging me that.
[00:05:44] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:05:45] [SPEAKER_01]: Anyway.
[00:05:45] [SPEAKER_01]: I thought it was cool.
[00:05:47] [SPEAKER_04]: Continuing our changing our mind series last week, Melissa talked about her clinical thing
[00:05:53] [SPEAKER_04]: and she talked about some CE courses that did or didn't go her way, which was a good
[00:05:58] [SPEAKER_04]: lesson if you missed it.
[00:06:00] [SPEAKER_04]: This week we're going to talk about maybe a business change that she's flipped the
[00:06:05] [SPEAKER_04]: switch on over the years.
[00:06:06] [SPEAKER_04]: So Melissa, what do you got for us on a business running into things?
[00:06:13] [SPEAKER_00]: So I have a couple of things that are probably short topics, but you know when you're first
[00:06:20] [SPEAKER_00]: starting out, you feel like you have to take every insurance and maybe this isn't what
[00:06:25] [SPEAKER_00]: you're looking for.
[00:06:26] [SPEAKER_00]: But you know, I started out, I took all the things.
[00:06:28] [SPEAKER_00]: I took the medical assistance.
[00:06:30] [SPEAKER_00]: I took all the things and I've slowly gotten rid of them over the years, you
[00:06:37] [SPEAKER_00]: know, never just like a mass drop everything at once.
[00:06:40] [SPEAKER_00]: And you always think, you know, people, I'm going to go under, people won't come back
[00:06:46] [SPEAKER_00]: and it just doesn't happen.
[00:06:48] [SPEAKER_00]: So I've changed my mind about how I feel about insurance.
[00:06:54] [SPEAKER_00]: And the other thing that business wise is when I started out, I felt like with my
[00:07:00] [SPEAKER_00]: team members, like I was afraid, like I always felt like everybody had to have a
[00:07:05] [SPEAKER_00]: voice in what we were doing.
[00:07:07] [SPEAKER_00]: Everybody got to say you got to make everybody happy, can't risk, you know,
[00:07:12] [SPEAKER_00]: saying something because you know, what if they quit?
[00:07:16] [SPEAKER_00]: And it's just not the case.
[00:07:18] [SPEAKER_00]: You're the leader.
[00:07:19] [SPEAKER_00]: Their opinion is important, but at some point you just have to step up and
[00:07:24] [SPEAKER_00]: make a decision that works for your practice and your vision.
[00:07:27] [SPEAKER_00]: And I think when you're younger, sometimes it's harder to have that
[00:07:31] [SPEAKER_00]: vision.
[00:07:32] [SPEAKER_00]: But so, yeah, I don't try to please people as much anymore.
[00:07:37] [SPEAKER_01]: Let's circle back to the insurance thing at what stage of the game did you
[00:07:43] [SPEAKER_01]: start dropping them?
[00:07:45] [SPEAKER_00]: So I started dropping some of them rather quickly like year two.
[00:07:49] [SPEAKER_00]: I stopped taking the state insurance, made me very angry to have people
[00:07:54] [SPEAKER_00]: come in as I can't even go on a vacation yet and they're on state
[00:07:59] [SPEAKER_00]: insurance and they have like really nice cars and like Ray bands and better
[00:08:06] [SPEAKER_00]: cell phones.
[00:08:07] [SPEAKER_00]: So that was my first one.
[00:08:10] [SPEAKER_00]: I think MetLife was my second one.
[00:08:13] [SPEAKER_00]: And that one was eye-opening because a lot of people's benefits went up
[00:08:17] [SPEAKER_00]: actually without a network.
[00:08:20] [SPEAKER_00]: And then, yeah, just slowly Delta was my 2004 one.
[00:08:25] [SPEAKER_00]: That was the hardest, which anybody who's done that feels that pain.
[00:08:31] [SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, it's tough, right?
[00:08:33] [SPEAKER_00]: It's tough to do because you want butts in the chair, but sometimes butts
[00:08:38] [SPEAKER_00]: in the chair doesn't equate to profitability or happiness or lack of
[00:08:45] [SPEAKER_00]: like just because you're busy doesn't mean you're doing well.
[00:08:48] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think that that's a big fear with some of the younger
[00:08:52] [SPEAKER_01]: dentists I talked to.
[00:08:54] [SPEAKER_01]: And I understand the fear, absolutely.
[00:08:58] [SPEAKER_01]: But I think that for a lot of it's almost like the same story.
[00:09:04] [SPEAKER_01]: Like I can't be profitable doing X, Y or Z procedure.
[00:09:07] [SPEAKER_01]: And then my question is then why are you taking that insurance at all?
[00:09:13] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, because I'll lose all these patients.
[00:09:14] [SPEAKER_01]: But didn't you hear what you just said?
[00:09:16] [SPEAKER_01]: So like it goes in this vicious cycle.
[00:09:18] [SPEAKER_01]: I understand it.
[00:09:20] [SPEAKER_01]: But you know, I just think that like you came to the conclusion
[00:09:26] [SPEAKER_01]: your business isn't going to die over that.
[00:09:30] [SPEAKER_04]: People are terrified of open time though.
[00:09:32] [SPEAKER_04]: They shouldn't be, but I also know that it's a whole thing
[00:09:38] [SPEAKER_04]: when you come out of school and you get this looming debt over your head.
[00:09:41] [SPEAKER_04]: So I understand that too.
[00:09:44] [SPEAKER_00]: I don't mean to say any of that lightly because I mean, I completely get it.
[00:09:50] [SPEAKER_00]: But I think it's important.
[00:09:52] [SPEAKER_00]: I didn't really understand the business of my business when I started it in 1997.
[00:09:59] [SPEAKER_00]: And I think that I mean, I've definitely changed my mind on how I feel about my business
[00:10:05] [SPEAKER_00]: in the sense that before I just thought, you know, it is what it is and how it went is how it went.
[00:10:10] [SPEAKER_00]: And now I think I understand a lot more that I control how it goes
[00:10:14] [SPEAKER_00]: and I can guide what it looks like.
[00:10:16] [SPEAKER_00]: Purposeful.
[00:10:17] [SPEAKER_00]: Yes, and I can more choose do I want to fill my days with 30 minute visits for people
[00:10:23] [SPEAKER_00]: that are only there because they have to be
[00:10:26] [SPEAKER_00]: or do I want to fill my day with people who choose me?
[00:10:30] [SPEAKER_01]: I love it.
[00:10:34] [SPEAKER_01]: Let's talk about employees.
[00:10:36] [SPEAKER_00]: So I just all the hot topics.
[00:10:40] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so I think that as long as you're maintaining a private practice
[00:10:47] [SPEAKER_01]: that you're always going to have some employee problems.
[00:10:51] [SPEAKER_01]: It's just been my experience is that it's almost a never ending thing.
[00:10:59] [SPEAKER_01]: And just when you think you've got everything nailed down someone quits
[00:11:02] [SPEAKER_01]: or gets pregnant or always or.
[00:11:05] [SPEAKER_01]: Or goes off the deep end on something and then you've got to start over again.
[00:11:12] [SPEAKER_00]: When I first started one of the local orthodontists said, can I take you out to lunch?
[00:11:17] [SPEAKER_00]: And he was an older gentleman like maybe in his early 70s late 60s.
[00:11:21] [SPEAKER_00]: He's like, I want to talk to you about your team.
[00:11:23] [SPEAKER_00]: And I'm like, okay.
[00:11:24] [SPEAKER_00]: And he's like, I want you to know that every five years someone will leave someone will quit
[00:11:29] [SPEAKER_00]: just when you think you're comfortable.
[00:11:31] [SPEAKER_00]: Don't be comfortable because I'm telling you every five years something major will happen in your team.
[00:11:38] [SPEAKER_00]: He's not wrong.
[00:11:39] [SPEAKER_01]: He's not wrong.
[00:11:42] [SPEAKER_01]: And I think that you also said something at the beginning of that, that it is you and it is me and it is Zach.
[00:11:52] [SPEAKER_01]: It's like my.
[00:11:53] [SPEAKER_01]: You were constant in your practice.
[00:11:55] [SPEAKER_01]: Right.
[00:11:55] [SPEAKER_01]: And so we had a key person leave last year and I was scared to death for a week or so that like no one mentioned her
[00:12:05] [SPEAKER_01]: or talked about her or whatever.
[00:12:07] [SPEAKER_01]: And that was a reminder again that my name's on the door.
[00:12:12] [SPEAKER_01]: And you know, so it, I think that people are replaceable.
[00:12:20] [SPEAKER_01]: And so my mantra to the stars in my practice are make yourself irreplaceable.
[00:12:27] [SPEAKER_01]: Like that's how that's how you should approach your job.
[00:12:31] [SPEAKER_01]: Make yourself irreplaceable and but not everyone can take that advice.
[00:12:36] [SPEAKER_00]: Run smoother and better and easier.
[00:12:38] [SPEAKER_00]: And if you make my days better than like what's going on.
[00:12:44] [SPEAKER_00]: Right.
[00:12:45] [SPEAKER_00]: You know, I don't know about you guys but I when I first started out, I felt a lot like the way we did things in our office,
[00:12:51] [SPEAKER_00]: like our collection policies, let's say, or whatever policy, you know, I take like a vote amongst the employees.
[00:12:58] [SPEAKER_00]: Like, do you think that like we should make people pay their co pays the day of or should we let them get billed for it?
[00:13:05] [SPEAKER_00]: Or like I'd let my front desk dictate to me what she thought like things should be set up wise.
[00:13:12] [SPEAKER_00]: Well, then they leave and I'm stuck with their stuff that like I don't really want.
[00:13:16] [SPEAKER_00]: And it just would have been better if I could have leadership up and maybe set my own policies to start with.
[00:13:23] [SPEAKER_01]: I have some trusted employees that I'll bounce things off of.
[00:13:28] [SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely.
[00:13:29] [SPEAKER_01]: I find myself a lot of the time saying this is what I want to do.
[00:13:33] [SPEAKER_01]: And I'm just looking for you to agree with me.
[00:13:36] [SPEAKER_01]: Now, occasionally they'll not occasionally oftentimes they'll come up with, you know, good, good ideas that I would have never thought of.
[00:13:45] [SPEAKER_01]: But but it is not a democracy at all.
[00:13:50] [SPEAKER_01]: Sure.
[00:13:51] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:13:51] [SPEAKER_00]: And I mean, I don't get me wrong.
[00:13:53] [SPEAKER_00]: I definitely ask for input or like tell me what I could do to make this job run more smoothly for you.
[00:14:01] [SPEAKER_00]: What do you need?
[00:14:02] [SPEAKER_00]: Do you have all the things you need to be proficient at this?
[00:14:06] [SPEAKER_00]: But ultimately, like I'm going to decide no, we're going to send these people to collections or no, we're going to collect co-pays the day of service or I'm sorry, but you're not going to pack me with 30 minute appointments back to back to back because that's the only day the patient could possibly come in.
[00:14:24] [SPEAKER_01]: Right.
[00:14:25] [SPEAKER_01]: Right.
[00:14:26] [SPEAKER_00]: I love it.
[00:14:26] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm the one whose neck hurts, not yours.
[00:14:29] [SPEAKER_04]: Right.
[00:14:31] [SPEAKER_04]: Right.
[00:14:32] [SPEAKER_04]: Yep.
[00:14:32] [SPEAKER_04]: Very true.
[00:14:34] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, they go home at night and they're fine.
[00:14:36] [SPEAKER_00]: And we go home and like we sit there in it like it spins in our head.
[00:14:40] [SPEAKER_00]: I do the right thing.
[00:14:41] [SPEAKER_00]: Do I do the right thing?
[00:14:42] [SPEAKER_00]: Do I do the right thing?
[00:14:44] [SPEAKER_00]: And so yeah, you have to be comfortable with the way you do things and run things.
[00:14:48] [SPEAKER_01]: Especially if your name's on the door that like we've had this discussion all the time.
[00:14:52] [SPEAKER_01]: You can you can go home and it's over for you.
[00:14:54] [SPEAKER_01]: But we all know procedure didn't go right.
[00:15:00] [SPEAKER_01]: Someone's mad or whatever it is, it's going to weigh on you all night long or sometimes
[00:15:06] [SPEAKER_01]: when you go to Florida last week, it weighs on you the whole time you're there.
[00:15:11] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
[00:15:12] [SPEAKER_04]: So I think to your credit though Melissa, I mean, it's I think it's easier to be
[00:15:19] [SPEAKER_04]: able to make some of those like, Hey, this is the way it's going to be when you've
[00:15:23] [SPEAKER_04]: been doing it for a couple of decades as opposed to when you're new and maybe some
[00:15:28] [SPEAKER_04]: of the people you're hiring are older than you, you know, or more experienced than you.
[00:15:33] [SPEAKER_00]: Yes, but that doesn't mean we have better information.
[00:15:36] [SPEAKER_04]: No, it doesn't mean that, but it still makes it hard for you to do it, you know?
[00:15:42] [SPEAKER_00]: Absolutely.
[00:15:42] [SPEAKER_00]: I had a German front desk who when you think of like a strong willed German, she is all
[00:15:47] [SPEAKER_00]: the things right?
[00:15:48] [SPEAKER_00]: She has a heavy accent and she has short air and she looks very militant.
[00:15:53] [SPEAKER_00]: And like she is going to like, and I'm telling you that woman ran me for three years before
[00:16:00] [SPEAKER_00]: I let her go.
[00:16:00] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:16:01] [SPEAKER_00]: And I was afraid.
[00:16:04] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I get it.
[00:16:06] [SPEAKER_04]: Yep.
[00:16:06] [SPEAKER_04]: I get it.
[00:16:07] [SPEAKER_04]: Perfect.
[00:16:08] [SPEAKER_04]: Good business topics, Melissa.
[00:16:10] [SPEAKER_04]: Good business.
[00:16:11] [SPEAKER_04]: We appreciate it.
[00:16:12] [SPEAKER_04]: Kevin, any final thoughts on that or?
[00:16:15] [SPEAKER_01]: No, I think again, I think the younger Dennis should rewind this and listen to
[00:16:20] [SPEAKER_01]: it a couple times because good advice.
[00:16:23] [SPEAKER_01]: I like, you know, I don't know how many of these we've done six or seven, five or six.
[00:16:29] [SPEAKER_01]: I lost track of it.
[00:16:30] [SPEAKER_01]: It's a lot.
[00:16:30] [SPEAKER_01]: We're going down a different avenue this time.
[00:16:33] [SPEAKER_01]: So I love it.
[00:16:33] [SPEAKER_01]: Yep.
[00:16:34] [SPEAKER_04]: Perfect.
[00:16:35] [SPEAKER_04]: And again, if you enjoyed listening to Melissa today, we hope you did.
[00:16:38] [SPEAKER_04]: She will be back next week to find out what she has changed her mind on in life
[00:16:42] [SPEAKER_04]: in general, deep, deep stuff.
[00:16:46] [SPEAKER_04]: All right.
[00:16:47] [SPEAKER_04]: Thank you guys for listening and we will see you next Tuesday.
[00:16:51] [SPEAKER_04]: See ya.
