Al was joined by hygienist Whitney DiFoggio (aka: Teeth Talk Girl) at the Chicago Midwinter dental meeting!
Whitney is a hygienist and influencer who spends a lot of time education patients AND dental teams! Interestingly, her YouTube presence points toward patients and her Instagram is more oriented toward dental teams!
Whitney and Al have an animated conversation about having Invisalign as a dental person, dental content creation and have dentists given up on prevention?

[00:00:00] Picture this, you've got perfect isolation. Your matrix is placed. You've etched and bonded,
[00:00:05] and you're going to place in foldable. You look up and see your assistance back running out of the
[00:00:09] operator because you're out of foldable tips. Maybe it doesn't happen in your office but if you're like most
[00:00:14] offices, it sometimes does. We try to organize every aspect of our business but let's face it,
[00:00:19] maintaining order in the midst of a busy practice is easier said than done. Small oversights can snowball into big
[00:00:25] challenges, running out of supplies, misplacing instruments and worst of all, when your assistant has to
[00:00:29] leave chair side to retrieve something they forgot. What's the solution? A lean clinical workflow,
[00:00:34] a systematic approach that brings order to the chaos, benefiting dental practices of all sizes,
[00:00:39] and the only one leading to charge in this revolution is Zirk, the company behind the best
[00:00:43] dental material ever used. They've created the color method, a lean clinical workflow framework
[00:00:48] designed to transform the way your team stores materials, restock's materials, and reprocesses
[00:00:53] instruments. You've heard us talk about it before and now it's time to take action. Picture a practice
[00:00:58] where every instrument has its place, where supplies are never depleted and where the overwhelming
[00:01:02] amount of instruments and materials gives way to a seamlessly organized workflow. Don't let the
[00:01:07] disorder of things dictate your day. Join the movement towards efficiency and excellence with Zirk's
[00:01:11] color method. Visit ColorMethod.com today to get a free demo or if you're ready to go deeper,

[00:01:30] This is a production of the very dental podcast network.
[00:01:34] This is the very dental podcast.
[00:01:46] Welcome to the very dental podcast where you'll find entertaining and relevant conversations with
[00:01:52] visionaries, clinicians and your friends in the dental space. Now here's your host Dr. Alan Mead.
[00:01:58] Very dental people welcome back another episode of the very dental podcast.
[00:02:03] I've been saying live. It's not live. This is recorded. It's not live but I'm live in Chicago,
[00:02:09] the mid-winner, 2024 sitting in the beautiful podcasting booth that they put together. I feel like
[00:02:15] if they keep doing this I will definitely keep coming. My view I've been coming through a thousand years
[00:02:20] but joining me to co-host today Whitney DeFogio. Thank you for coming. Whitney actually has
[00:02:28] been on the show. We figure it might have been 20 or 2019 we're not exactly sure. They didn't have
[00:02:34] this booth back then. We just sat on, yeah, we actually sat like over by right around here.
[00:02:39] The same area. The far edge and we were just kind of goofing around. There were couches and then
[00:02:44] there were people doing yoga. Now it's all official. We're in a quiet booth. I love to take credit.
[00:02:51] I literally didn't sign up yesterday. You're supposed to sign up. No one was in here. I'm like,
[00:02:56] I'll just come in here. Perfect. They came in and said we saw you in here yesterday. I'm like,
[00:03:01] I'm sorry. I signed up for today actually. Oh, you have to sign up. But they gave me a press pass.
[00:03:07] That's what I am. What does that get me? She says nothing. I'm like, okay. Excellent.
[00:03:13] You're allowed in the podcast. Yeah, apparently. Oh, but that's what it is. Maybe.
[00:03:17] And I was like, I wasn't legal. You were a dentist when you're a podcast. I'm such a radical.
[00:03:23] It's crazy. So Whitney is a high genist and she is, I hate to use the term because all actual
[00:03:29] influencers hate the term influencer. Am I right? You, yeah. I thought it was just me who didn't
[00:03:34] like it. But that's good to know others are like, yeah, I don't know. I don't consider you an
[00:03:39] influencer. I don't consider myself an influencer. So I hate because I'm old.
[00:03:43] You're old people can't be influencers in the same way. No, you're not. You're just
[00:03:48] I'm close to being an elder millennial. I'm not a younger millennial. I'm closer to elder.
[00:03:53] I think I'm right smack-dagged in the middle. But if you had to choose elder millennia,
[00:03:56] that still means you're young. I'm smack-dab in the middle of Gen X girlfriend. Girlfriend.
[00:04:02] Like when I was a kid we had rotary phones. That's what I'm saying. Andrew machines didn't exist.
[00:04:07] I'm just just putting out there. But in any case, well it tells me this that yeah,
[00:04:12] like influencer culture does seem to lean young. But but I do think that like and I only say it
[00:04:17] because you have a lot of content on on Instagram. I have to say you probably have a TikTok too.
[00:04:21] I don't follow TikTok at all. So are you a TikTok person? So I'm trying to get into it.
[00:04:24] Okay. I am yeah. I love my Instagram. You know what's so funny? My Instagram is like all
[00:04:29] dead. We'll give everyone your Instagram just think about it. At Teeth Talk Girl. Teeth Talk Girl.
[00:04:33] I have a liner's in right now so if I'm listening that is why. I feel like the
[00:04:37] liners give you lots of credibility. I'm trying not to let you know why you're
[00:04:41] walking the walk baby. Okay, I'm doing it. Yeah. I almost didn't wear them today. And I was like no
[00:04:45] this is the place I have to wear them. I agree. I agree. I agree. You have to flutcel.
[00:04:49] Yeah. I totally agree. But it's hard to snack. You know about that. It's like oh do I want
[00:04:54] to snack? Do I want to nod? My son had had in Visaline for I think he's in it for close to two
[00:04:59] years. He got almost like 11 right and you're thinking oh man I'm 11 year old boy. Yeah.
[00:05:04] He hated his teeth so much. He was he was he was rock star. Did you do it for him? No, I did
[00:05:10] I didn't worth it on his friend real farm and honestly he's he does so well like 11 year old
[00:05:14] boys are probably not the Democrat like like no I'd be like your boy sure okay they're going to
[00:05:19] rot their teeth up and everything or the compliance yeah he never missed never missed is unbelievable
[00:05:24] and it really was it was a great it was a great job but you're like I have to say the 11 year old
[00:05:29] boys in my practice I would not bet on them compared to Jacob Jacob but Jacob hated his teeth so much
[00:05:34] he had he had my teeth. Well you have nice teeth that I'll say. Yeah I didn't I here's the thing
[00:05:39] the needs all of them mom side dad side we have much bigger jaws than we have teeth okay so
[00:05:46] which is a different orthodontic problem and not the most most common is is the opposite where
[00:05:50] you're crowded yeah so Jacob his front teeth just like mine when I was a little kid flared
[00:05:55] out it big spaces he hated that yeah my dad had me in in braces he's a dentist had me in
[00:06:01] wire braces when I was like I bet you I was embracing I was 11 I was the worth or who pays and
[00:06:07] I was the worst ortho patient ever I lost retainers I I busted like I ate bit of honey's and
[00:06:13] shit like that you wouldn't have been good at the aligners is that right to line okay you would
[00:06:18] not write you wouldn't grab the braces yeah your son's great at that he was but you're not
[00:06:23] supposed to snack is that what you're telling me well I don't know I need to talk to your son maybe
[00:06:26] he will inspire me but maybe he'll give you some tips on snacking it's just when you you have to
[00:06:30] take him out to snack yeah yeah and then I'm not putting them back in my mouth without brushing
[00:06:34] and philosophy yeah I'm not gonna trap whatever's up in the you know what I mean great trap I go yeah so
[00:06:38] I just gargle with a little mountain doing snap and I have to tongue scrape I have to do the
[00:06:43] holding before I put the back so you're it's time consuming so I'm like is it worth the snack having
[00:06:47] to do all that pretty good snack I mean it's got a good snack yeah so are you saying in this bag
[00:06:52] that you have you've got the whole gear so you can I do I could even fit it's a toothbrush and I
[00:06:57] was nervous because I knew my phone would fit yeah but with my phone I have my little what do
[00:07:01] you call it the container that holds the yeah the trays them is like what it's a tray holder
[00:07:06] holder thank you I could fit the holder in there but I can't for my phone yeah but I was like no
[00:07:10] I need to bring that holder yeah if there's a snack I need to take them out yeah and I got
[00:07:14] little brushes I got you really do okay you're not in there okay so this woman walks the walk
[00:07:18] I think that's I think that's the that's the episode title I do I do kind of love it though actually it's
[00:07:23] a you gotta do how long how why did you do in visline what what did you need to change so my lower
[00:07:32] canine you can see it sorry to people listening cannot but yeah it's great great audio part
[00:07:37] I'll vouch for it's true she's showing me true because like 27 yeah it was just rotating rotating
[00:07:44] I had braces when I was young however they gave me this is so interesting and like nobody ever
[00:07:48] talks about this I feel like but they instead of doing a permanent retainer you know the metal
[00:07:52] permanent or doing the in visline looking retainers they gave me a uh in and out a removable metal
[00:07:59] yeah and like my I wore it every single night because you've seen I'm a regimented I have
[00:08:04] and my canine just started rotating yeah yeah I don't think the thing was made right there
[00:08:09] what it did engage right to work yeah it was just like putting the bar yeah it was very old school
[00:08:13] and it's just I put the bar there but my teeth all so I'm someone who did follow all the rules
[00:08:17] then you'd still yeah but it's so it's been bothering me and I was like I'm just gonna do it
[00:08:21] let's do it funny human beings like it okay just like everything in dentistry yeah figure they
[00:08:26] paid a ton of money for it yeah it's forever yeah it's forever and here's the thing your teeth
[00:08:31] start moving as soon as you're out of the stuff really and truly and I wore it every night
[00:08:34] but I do do you feel like the clear aligners hold your cheap in place better
[00:08:38] I think so I think so I think there's a lot I have a lot of patients that are pretty happy with
[00:08:41] that retainer I gotta tell you I have a lot of patients that are my age holds on to them that have
[00:08:45] that have bonded those bonded lower interiors yeah well those are as I join us to clean them forget
[00:08:50] about it but they I think they help a little holding the teeth but I sure but they're very hard to
[00:08:55] grow yeah in the thing about it is even if even if you place them well they're still
[00:09:00] really I mean this is you have to be committed to that stuff you know the funny thing about
[00:09:04] being a hygienist I have like satisfaction cleaning around them because I kind of like oh this
[00:09:08] is gonna be fun I get to get an awful lot of cover this is however I get stressed because of
[00:09:11] the time yeah right like if I had enough time to do it yeah in the you know appointment I'd be
[00:09:17] happy to be clean so my sister had a bonded retainer like that for at my sister's older to me my
[00:09:22] sister's now she's 54 yeah she's I center doing orthodontic doing business I took the I took her
[00:09:28] bond retainer off so it was starting to break down stuff yeah her teeth are all loose oh yeah like
[00:09:33] it's that like she is yeah we think that we think that we can help a lot like she she's a tongue
[00:09:38] thruster for sure so she was trusting instead of individual teeth she's trusting it as a as a unit
[00:09:43] because her bond together you're like oh my god yeah it's she's making progress and she is she is if
[00:09:49] in viseline has an avatar of the person that should be in my sister is in and she's like you she's
[00:09:54] doing it yeah she wouldn't she would follow every direction she would yeah she's very so I think
[00:09:59] it'll be good for but the rules on the homework yeah sorry I think I went on a tangent I was like
[00:10:04] yeah that's where you're for oh that was like I think you asked me about my Instagram and I started
[00:10:08] just talking about it I don't even know so so Instagram you were talking about you were you're
[00:10:12] starting to go in TikTok would you like your Instagram okay I love Instagram okay this is
[00:10:16] what it's fun so I started on YouTube when I started doing on my teeth talks teeth talk stuff oh
[00:10:20] that's it that's alright it's there was pretty to dental pocket they get appreciated yeah and especially
[00:10:25] with please remember I have been the I'm the chosen yeah that's why I'm talking yeah okay so I started
[00:10:30] on YouTube I love YouTube YouTube and I baby right interesting yeah yeah that's where started I
[00:10:34] started before tic-tac was invented right and Instagram was around but it was so no one was vlogging
[00:10:41] there was no stories there were no stories yet which is voted you remember so anyway I had an
[00:10:45] Instagram but no yeah YouTube's my baby that's where everything happens I I have like mostly consumers
[00:10:50] on on YouTube yeah I have a good amount of professionals that watch my YouTube videos but there's
[00:10:54] a lot of just patients that are excited about wellness and dental health and I love that yeah yeah
[00:10:59] Instagram funny enough my main audience is all dental people sure right either students people
[00:11:03] interested in the dental world sure there's some consumers but the main majority isn't so I love
[00:11:08] my Instagram because it's all my dental beach hall do you have do you have to you have to make
[00:11:11] different content for your different platform funny I don't I saw I shoot it I probably show you
[00:11:15] how what I do is I try to lie used whatever it long story short what I've come to the conclusion is
[00:11:22] everything that's for consumers or for patients right like dental health tips yep what I found
[00:11:27] is that dental professionals also they've told me and they're like hey I used your video about I
[00:11:33] don't know what's the difference between black and Carter for patient for patient yeah oh wow
[00:11:37] yeah they're like hey I saw your plaque in tartar video I obviously know the difference between
[00:11:40] plaque and tartar calculus or whatever you want to call it yeah they're like I actually the way
[00:11:44] you phrased it in your video that's how I'm saying it to my patients yeah like oh so the
[00:11:48] professionals are watching this too oh my gosh I just spent and hit your mic on you're okay
[00:11:51] so I'm struggling with these aligners everybody please this is oh this is only this is week three
[00:11:56] if everyone doesn't know so it's pretty new I'm trying to figure this life out thank you
[00:12:00] for tons like what makes fifths so anyway yeah so I love my Instagram community because it's all
[00:12:07] the the dental peeps but I am trying to make more content like specific for a dental person you know
[00:12:12] I get it your chair positioning you know stuff that a consumer wouldn't care about so I try to do
[00:12:16] a little bit of both now but I my passion is patient education I'm grad school right now I don't
[00:12:21] know if it's just I mean I'm getting my masters in health communication oh wow and so oh my gosh
[00:12:26] what I love it so I did a lot of I was almost going to do my like end of your thesis capstone on
[00:12:31] patient provider communication and how to improve it and all that and I love that I'm just so
[00:12:35] much writing throughout this program I'm in my last semester right now and I thought that was
[00:12:38] going to be my capstone and but I changed it last minute and what I'm writing about now is dental
[00:12:44] misinformation on social media oh my gosh there's that's that's a that's a ripe last minute I was
[00:12:49] like you know at this not that patient provider education isn't important but I was I've been
[00:12:53] seeing so much misinformation lately that's just like wild like switch with celery season so what
[00:12:58] you're saying you probably I probably shouldn't give you this big two of charcoal two things you know
[00:13:04] it's so funny I've seen wilder ones though like we know about you know the ones we've heard but like
[00:13:08] switch with celery if you heard this one switch with celery juice if you and then you don't
[00:13:13] need a root canal it gets rid of your that's the new one I love I love you talking about people
[00:13:20] who don't actually know what any of these stuff is yes they have an infected tooth and they're like no
[00:13:23] no I don't do any bad I'm like you don't need to anybody I can remove the infection you need
[00:13:27] it you know they're like no no I switch for cellar juice in the pain win away and I try to explain
[00:13:30] like your tooth might have died but that doesn't mean the infection's gone there could be an
[00:13:33] absence I try to explain all this stuff and you're spoken to a brick wall because that's what you're
[00:13:37] doing yes it is but I'm trying to change it and that's why I'm doing mine that's a really it's a
[00:13:40] really here's the thing okay there has to be strategies something I wanted to talk to you about
[00:13:44] something I want to talk to you about and now I this is even an even more perfect topic yeah
[00:13:48] than I thought okay cuz I lately have been seeing I think that dentists god this is terrible
[00:13:55] I'm gonna say dentists have more or less given up on prevention right you're feeling
[00:14:01] oh I'm not a dentist I know I know I know you work with them I do I am a dentist and I'm like okay
[00:14:06] so one thing I just I want to speak for dentists we were we were do you feel that way I do
[00:14:11] okay because a couple things first off so much of our continued education is pointed towards high
[00:14:17] dollar high revenue don't save the tooth we should just put it in planted here and I mean I
[00:14:23] feel strongly that's that's the wrong way to go you can argue about that but I also think that
[00:14:28] I think dentists give lip service to prevention I really do I because here's the thing I hear
[00:14:34] here's here's my proof of that and I've never been wrong about that okay yeah dentists do you have
[00:14:41] a space in your office where you have a mirror where where someone can watch the patient brush their
[00:14:47] teeth and floss because if you don't you probably don't really care that much about prevention I don't
[00:14:52] have that yet I'm going to I'm convinced that oral hygiene instruction when when you can't I know
[00:14:59] you you must be feeling me because yeah yeah you can go through the motions and explain it but
[00:15:04] the reality is like if you want to know that a patient understands the treatment you're offering
[00:15:09] as a dentist explain it to him then stop and say how did you tell me what I like explained back
[00:15:14] to me why I said I mean of course it's very condescending yeah you don't want to act like that
[00:15:19] reality is sometimes like I want to make sure we're on the same page yeah explain to me what we're
[00:15:23] going to do here and that's the same way is if you can actually give them a brush give them some
[00:15:28] floss in because no one wants to show you how they do it no they don't want to look stupid yeah
[00:15:33] I want to show yeah you know it's so interesting I'm a dental on my videos on YouTube I have a how
[00:15:37] to floss video yeah and I used to I did it on a type of dog right and all the you know a bunch of
[00:15:41] the comments were yelling at me like okay well that was easy show me on your own mouth like how do you
[00:15:45] do it on your I was like you're right you're right so I showed it my own mouth yeah and people
[00:15:49] were freaking out like I'm 43 years old been flossing around the whole my whole life thanks for
[00:15:53] this video I have so many yeah I'll put all that in the show notes so people can see it but yeah
[00:15:57] oh yeah that was it's a huge thing nice yeah it's just how to floss your teeth at night did it
[00:16:01] in my own mouth you know whatever and you know so many people you know what's wrong this is what's
[00:16:05] wrong too the movies and the TV shows out there do you ever see how they floss they go back and
[00:16:10] forth they see saw yeah why is everyone see saw on TV you're supposed to go up and down you can
[00:16:14] scrape the sides of the teeth what's everyone see so it's it's honestly they don't know when you
[00:16:18] understand that flossing gets surfaces of the teeth that you if you could brush all the surfaces
[00:16:23] you would yeah you know everyone just floss it yeah Jennifer Amison wow anything so it's
[00:16:29] damn picks which I know if one loves the pics with the reality is that it's hard to pick sort of
[00:16:33] almost looks like a little tooth saw I have a how to how to use the pick correctly video too because
[00:16:39] that you know if they some are more bendy like if someone's only going to use the pick then
[00:16:42] let me work with it but you got it but I of course prefer string floss but yeah Jennifer Amison
[00:16:47] rooted for us all know I'm just kidding I just remember I've seen her in most I like it I've
[00:16:50] seen her in multiple movies using those flossers wrong I'm like what are you doing good friend
[00:16:55] well it is it is funny though because there's there's a part of this that it's like you can't
[00:17:01] we care about this stuff so much more than than people do but I do think that if they realize that
[00:17:07] okay let me just tell you this I have a URL a domain that I've owned for years call 363 days
[00:17:15] dot com why would I do that because most people are on their own for 363 days of the year
[00:17:22] they see us twice a year I love that and it was I wanted to make it a prevention thing because
[00:17:26] here's the thing like you got you got to do as well as we do a 363 days a year and and it's frustrating
[00:17:35] to me because and I can't say that I'm doing a good job with this because I'm busy trying to
[00:17:40] be a dentist but I do believe that like so much of what I do you got some a new cavity okay so I'm
[00:17:47] putting it filling in a tooth that's had restorations that are breaking down I need to put a crown
[00:17:51] on it yeah there's that that life cycle of the tooth I hate to say dying I know some but the
[00:17:56] reality is is like you know once you've interceded on a tooth the world is like this nothing lasts
[00:18:02] forever so you've got you know ideally you do the smallest intervention you can but the reality is
[00:18:07] that if you never had to do the intervention in the first place okay so like everyone goes yeah
[00:18:12] well that's what prevention's about people don't do it no people don't and I honestly think people
[00:18:17] don't really believe that won't happen to me it's not gonna happen to me I mean cavity satsang
[00:18:21] they believe it I love 363 that's amazing and I do have to say that was a great segue into something
[00:18:26] else I should definitely say yeah so I started I I worked well I helped develop it's called better
[00:18:31] mouth yeah and it's it's an interactive platform it's kind of like a it's like an app yeah but it's
[00:18:37] not an app it's I don't know I'm not explaining this well already but long story short I always say
[00:18:41] this you have your six month cleanings we can only do so much it's what you do every day in between
[00:18:46] those six months yeah and I have a lot of patients that's like joke with me they're like Whitney I wish
[00:18:50] I could just take you home with me so you can brush and floss for me and I'm like no so I do I'm on
[00:18:54] this this interactive platform called better mouth now and it's you get a morning text message it
[00:18:59] reminds you to brush and it gives all this information I like helped them create the content because
[00:19:04] I was like hold on I want to make sure all the content is correct you know what I mean so yeah in
[00:19:06] the morning it gives you all the information there's a two minute video or song that you send
[00:19:10] to make sure you brush the two minutes and then after it and then the morning ones really short and
[00:19:14] then the night one it's like a minute or two on a fun fact about dental hygiene like did you
[00:19:19] know about a tongue scraper did you know about the pH of your mouth did you you know nutritional counseling
[00:19:24] stuff like that so yeah better mouth I've been like so I don't even plan to talk about that here but yeah
[00:19:28] I've been loving better mouth what a good idea is it like is it on your phone or is that so you
[00:19:33] you sign up better mouth.com okay and they send you text messages and then in a text message there's
[00:19:37] a link and it sends you to like you get a page each day like day one day two day three it's like
[00:19:40] a 30-day challenge and once you get through the 30 days there's also like a new brush anymore
[00:19:45] right all right the goal is that now you know everything you can do there's instructional tutorials
[00:19:50] I have my videos in there like linked on some of them and showing how to hold floss some people just
[00:19:55] they're like hey I could do it I just don't know how to hold this listen every oral hygiene
[00:19:58] instruction I've ever seen or done there's a lot of assumptions made we should not make we should
[00:20:04] why would any why should I assume that these people I mean honestly it's sort of like
[00:20:09] do you know how to blow your nose probably yeah like it's all these personal
[00:20:12] with the railings is that really show it up brushing there's there's strategies for crying out
[00:20:20] flossing like forcing is not easy yeah forcing takes a lot of dexterity and and the assumption is
[00:20:25] oh I'm brushing I'm flossing frankly I God love these patients but I don't know that they're doing
[00:20:30] right now so I watch them right as I see them and if you could if you could correct them the two
[00:20:34] days the year that we see them yeah and then maybe with something like that they'll remind them to
[00:20:38] in mind you can't you can't live their life for them no you the other thing is you can't care
[00:20:44] more than they do which is a real struggle for me right but for the people that want that
[00:20:48] extra help and ask me for that I always tell them about better mouth because I'm like hey you're
[00:20:51] gonna love this yeah it's like literally gonna help the people that want to do better they're
[00:20:55] probably already doing well too that's the thing however I have had some right that is true that's
[00:20:59] a good correlation I have had some people still struggling with like mental health or depression
[00:21:04] and things like that are even ADHD they've told me like Whitney I just like can't bring myself
[00:21:08] to do it I know I'm supposed to that's interesting and I'm like oh and so I've had a few patients
[00:21:12] tell me like you know what thank you like that helped me I mean 30 30 30 days is over and now I
[00:21:16] think I need to do it again you know what I mean I love that yeah it's something to just help
[00:21:20] motivate you know sometimes it's the motivation you know it's right and but anyway yeah so yeah
[00:21:25] I love her best so thank you for being here I have this concern though about like yeah
[00:21:29] like I feel like dentistry is moving towards towards uh okay dental implants obviously are amazing
[00:21:35] service in frankly you know there's plenty of people with the dental spaces they're playing
[00:21:39] but I feel like I feel like it's easier to go big picture and say I just need to do like a
[00:21:44] full arch of implant first up around me there's not a lot of people are gonna pay for that but
[00:21:48] secondly I mean but there are a lot of people doing it and a lot of people and I think this is like
[00:21:54] when you look big picture and you see that they're having a lot of dental problems you're not
[00:21:57] doing very well I can see why you're like you know what this person's gonna do better without teeth
[00:22:01] with the story is that's there's a lot to that if this is a 35 year old they've got potentially
[00:22:08] 35 40 50 years in this thing yeah they haven't had teeth that long and frankly they didn't take
[00:22:13] care of what God gave them all that well either so you're like in frankly the answer I mean those
[00:22:19] things aren't that easy to take care of either like there's a lot for that and unfortunately
[00:22:26] a lot of dentists are seeing you know dental benefit reimbursement going down like you want to do
[00:22:32] more I don't I mean I don't mind throwing my profession out of the boss about this because it's real
[00:22:36] and a bunch of it's like here I'm here and I want to make a bunch of money my thing is like
[00:22:40] dentists can make a really good living just doing regular stuff and I really believe that I think
[00:22:45] I think if we if we took prevention seriously I will say this I don't know how to change
[00:22:51] behavior very well right right right and typically what I know about from my in my history with
[00:22:56] addiction behavior changes when you want it to change when you wanted something different that's
[00:23:01] the only time it really like like you know recovering addicts and alcoholics get better when
[00:23:06] they decide they they don't want to do this anymore you know and I know it sounds a little silly but
[00:23:10] the reality is like that's the reality you can talk to a patient who's having I mean okay perio sucks
[00:23:16] because once you have perio the best you're ever going to be is right now with your bone levels
[00:23:22] and so might you certainly have less information to do a better job but frankly people don't
[00:23:27] we're just trying to not make it worse right and if you've already got decay going to maintain
[00:23:31] oh yeah it's the best you can do is where you are right now it's like and honestly people with
[00:23:36] perio have greater risk for perio now yeah people with decay of course they have
[00:23:40] like every cavity in your mouth it's a giant nitrous for bacteria that will do more decay and frankly
[00:23:44] it's diet I'm preaching the cry area but no I know I'm loving you are a team dental hygiene
[00:23:50] I am I am except I want to figure out like first off there's a lot of really cool technologies
[00:23:55] that that can make what we do in the office better but I actually feel like I want the magic one to
[00:24:01] help people at home understand that this is a big responsibility yes the motivation you don't want
[00:24:06] to see me yeah you've got to do a lot yeah and frankly sorry patients you're probably not doing
[00:24:11] a very good job I just filmed a video I didn't post it yet it's how to avoid the dentist
[00:24:17] seriously I was scared to post it because I was like hold on yeah you know I made my disclaimer
[00:24:20] at the beginning it's only for but I knew people maybe click it hopefully well I didn't post it
[00:24:24] yet maybe when this comes out but um I yeah I was like if avoiding the dentist my disclaimer
[00:24:29] it's only to see them for the exams that's what you want yeah yeah you want yeah easy the reality is
[00:24:34] is like what you really want is you want the hygienists to have almost nothing to do yeah that's
[00:24:41] true that's gonna be there and you'd rather have the dentist talk about your kids soccer team
[00:24:45] yes longer than oh my god we've got three rukin just like an oral health check that's easy
[00:24:50] yeah doesn't everyone want to also it's less expensive for everyone involved yes less time is a
[00:24:55] and like wouldn't it be great if your job was less making sure you scrape every surface
[00:25:02] in a um then if your job was like actually watching them brush their teeth and giving them pointers
[00:25:10] and knowing that they're doing a good job and that's why I do what I do on YouTube because I feel
[00:25:14] like I kind of get to do that you know what I mean yeah well my individual patients I used to not
[00:25:18] tell them that I made YouTube videos because I was stressed like that they would think I don't know
[00:25:21] YouTube had such a stigma for a while but now I think there's enough professionals on YouTube
[00:25:25] but yeah close my mind how I mean tons of my patients know that I've been doing a podcast for 10
[00:25:30] years I don't think I've had one I've had a couple to I don't think I don't think I've heard it
[00:25:35] one of them honestly yeah they're just like oh okay cool yeah and I think I think they don't care
[00:25:42] yeah it's not really for them all I don't mind the most thing to it yeah it is funny how like I
[00:25:47] mean you are a content creator I am a con it's different kinds of content to say but you know
[00:25:53] um I should ask you this yeah do you ever feel like you just have to constantly feed the beast
[00:25:58] you know what I mean like you can't I put out three episodes a week okay and I mean
[00:26:02] I have other people on the on the network recording so it's not all me recording but I actually
[00:26:07] do all the editing it's I mean the reality is that oh you do all your own yeah yeah I like it
[00:26:11] I'm really fast at I'm doing it for as long as I'm pretty good at it yeah pretty good at it but
[00:26:15] but the reality is like audio editing I don't like I like video editing really oh I think
[00:26:19] videos way harder I think audio is way harder because I can't pay attention or something and I'm
[00:26:23] like wait I need to be listen you know the funny thing I do I figured probably eight years into
[00:26:28] this deal uh-huh you can actually take the entire the entire file and you can you can compress it
[00:26:35] so it goes faster uh-huh but it's it's understandable it's crazy I've I've in that really has changed
[00:26:40] my life I can like I'm in a crunch I can knock out an hour episode epit-editing for in 30 minutes
[00:26:45] yeah I don't think my brain could listen that quick I've heard I've listened to podcasts on quick
[00:26:50] when it's like an advertisement and I listen yeah I listen I listened to everything I'm one and a half
[00:26:55] I go there you go and I'm okay but then I really can't be digit it's going so fast even though
[00:26:59] I talk fast but regardless that's cool in any case but do you feel like I feel like for me
[00:27:04] sometimes like I love coming here because I've got I've got months worth of content things up here
[00:27:09] now so but sometimes you feel like you're behind the eight ball and I mean the the solution if you
[00:27:15] want followers and consistency you have to be consistent you know that story right yeah so I I like
[00:27:20] to batch I'm a bachelor I do two full length videos a week two seasons and there's this and then
[00:27:25] every day I post a short so like either on YouTube or real or tiktok uh-huh that's very
[00:27:30] consistent the shorts boy I love it but it's so 70s a week right but the shorts believe it or not
[00:27:36] take me like way along in that funny because they're just so new and you want that you they need to be
[00:27:41] so exciting the whole entire time whereas along from video this person's already here for long
[00:27:45] for them so they're going to listen yeah whereas other person you have to keep their attention
[00:27:48] for the 30 seconds you know what I mean it's a lot yeah so I don't know how do you edit on how do
[00:27:52] you edit final cut pro however I would what do you when you well I use auditions for audio and I've
[00:27:58] been using audition for since I started yeah I mean grad band is fine I just you know it's really
[00:28:03] funny I just know once you start using a software you know it yeah you'll never change because I
[00:28:08] don't want to learn you do something exactly I would I need to learn final cut because I need to
[00:28:11] learn Adobe because there's so much cooler things you could do with Adobe Adobe is funny because they
[00:28:16] they've got so much I don't have I don't want to add up the money because I that too they're like
[00:28:20] 50 bucks a month yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah just their software for a lot of months yeah so now I have
[00:28:23] I'm very lucky to have a video editor doing my full length videos yeah yeah because I just I know
[00:28:27] that makes sense because they just said the short form it takes part but yeah but the long
[00:28:31] form also takes time yeah they're long and I just really don't have time how do you how do you
[00:28:35] do it like what's like like what's our process you have a do you have a day where you record every six
[00:28:40] weeks I batch every six weeks I film 14 videos 14 full length yeah 14 shorts and 14 like TikTok
[00:28:48] reels wow so I literally whatever is 14 times three I don't even want to think about it how many hours
[00:28:54] do you record so it takes us like five or four hours usually we're we're getting good at you
[00:28:58] stick me like nine hours you know what I mean but now I'm just boom boom because I have a teleprompter
[00:29:02] now so I'm boom boom I batched out the six weeks so it takes me a long time to write let's just
[00:29:07] say it's not like you can just go record it all right so the six weeks in between I am working on
[00:29:12] what it's gonna be yeah and then so the six weeks I'm working on the next video batch and I'm
[00:29:16] like getting the editing or organized for the ones I'm gonna post I'm always three months ahead
[00:29:20] which is like a cool thing I'm very proud of however it's confusing because you want to be
[00:29:24] topical sometimes yeah and then I have to squeeze something in and you know how it goes luckily
[00:29:28] you can't you can't get away with that if you're like your current events podcast
[00:29:31] you're so I would never go to say this because I know a lot of podcasters who are way ahead
[00:29:36] of the game with their stuff I am like I will likely something I recorded today will likely go out
[00:29:42] on Friday this week I mean yeah week from today or we yeah so you are on it because you're
[00:29:50] happy I'm on it I'm I'm flying by the sea to my pants the beautiful thing is as I got
[00:29:54] enough content I can take a couple breaths okay now I will do one episode that is almost always
[00:29:58] just a monologue of me okay well I think it's something in the car something like that and what's
[00:30:02] really funny is that is a people a lot of people like it yeah a lot of people you have such a
[00:30:08] soothing voice a lot of people are like whatever but but I think what's really funny is a lot of
[00:30:13] times those episodes come to me in one piece I don't write anything down I go boom oh we're just
[00:30:20] ad lib improv but but I've I've spoken into a microphone so much now it's easier for me it's really
[00:30:27] I will there are times I'm like I have an episode I have that needs to come out tomorrow and it'll
[00:30:31] be Sunday afternoon and that's a Monday and I'll do it oh no in fact I do that more often than
[00:30:36] what and frankly that's not kind of love really so you're some of these almost it's almost improvisation
[00:30:42] almost it sounds like it's the same thing here I don't I didn't know what I was gonna ask you but
[00:30:47] I had no worries that we're just yeah yeah I love chatting but if it's something where I need to
[00:30:51] get like talking you're doing you're doing then I get nervous because I'm like I kind of want
[00:30:55] to tell a prompt or does anyone have a tell me really talk so do you you write the stuff right
[00:30:59] every single script and I I literally write it verbatim okay verbatim there's only add something
[00:31:04] you know what I mean and I feel like I'm getting I when I tell people I will to my own horn on
[00:31:08] I'm getting okay I reading a teleprop well I'm not a skill yeah I'm not a skill list I was
[00:31:13] cracking up for school yeah forget school we had to do a class and there was like reading a
[00:31:18] teleprompter in all my classmates were freaking out and I was like this is gonna be great
[00:31:22] I was because I'm always the one struggling writing papers because I have biology and chemistry under
[00:31:26] ed like I don't know health communication I don't want to write like so I always struggled
[00:31:29] writing but the teleprompter came and I'm like hello that's awesome that was great so that's
[00:31:34] I mean I'm still not even that good oh my god but it's so weird you record your videos so my house
[00:31:40] I have I have done a chair you know it's okay it's um and it's our guest bedroom so if anyone wants
[00:31:45] to get guests who are all that you have a lot of different people that are on it so a lot of
[00:31:48] the very multiple they've been on the list so yeah I think for a smith and they're so nice I've
[00:31:52] had people at this conference asked me like hey I like that guy Ben he's so funny so yes my
[00:31:56] friends so I had a background in theater yeah I thought it was gonna be an actress no I don't believe
[00:32:00] really oh I'm kidding why did you say like that okay I'm like oh my god okay so sarke has a
[00:32:07] mining that work I didn't mean to be so I get well if you've ever seen anything you've done on
[00:32:12] in two days you can see the theater back all my friends are my friends from theater yeah and they
[00:32:16] all just pretend to be my patients a lot of people are like are your patients just signing up for
[00:32:20] this I was like absolutely not I was like it's my friends who come over and we're and I'm like
[00:32:24] they're like just give me a script let's let's go through a bunch and so I just tell them what to say
[00:32:28] we have a dental operator we have fun so yeah we have fun you know it doesn't work like you can't
[00:32:33] do anything on it but you could sit on it pretend that you're there and then like our our what is
[00:32:37] the call step baby next step the wall we want to make it look like an office and we bought those
[00:32:43] like those cabinets that you put in a garage they're like floating cabinets but they're white
[00:32:47] yeah it looks like an office I totally think I can use someone's office a lot of you ask me if
[00:32:52] it's a green screen and I was like no it's a real deal but then when I have to do like in in the
[00:32:56] mouth actual dental work then yes I'll go on like a Sunday or something my boss is really nice
[00:33:00] and gives me the key and then I'll I'll use their they're all freaking love that it's really really
[00:33:05] so I'm like total inside baseball with with your your Instagram stuff I mean like I said I'm not on
[00:33:09] TikTok I haven't really looked at the YouTube stuff but I mean I see the Instagram stuff all
[00:33:13] you know okay awesome yeah YouTube is more very it's very educational yeah I'm like this is
[00:33:18] you know I whatever this is this is that yeah but yeah and Instagram if I think it's more like
[00:33:24] fun for dental people because yeah I'm just like having fun yeah like I want to be relatable
[00:33:28] that's the thing a lot of times my the actors they'll be like well this is a scary skit
[00:33:32] did someone actually say this to you because like I have them say things and I'm like someone
[00:33:36] for sure absolutely yeah say to and they're like how I don't even know how we could deliver
[00:33:40] this but they're always great it's delivering at the line but anyway and then I'll post it
[00:33:44] and like sometimes people it's like awful things like you could imagine but anyway you can go
[00:33:49] watch them if you want at Teeth Talk Girl but yeah the things they say to me and the comments are
[00:33:53] always like oh my goodness what need thank you for doing the skit because like I thought I was the
[00:33:57] only one that had this creepy thing you know what I mean or like or this mean woman or this but
[00:34:02] whatever you know and so it just makes us I feel like it just knows that we're not alone yeah
[00:34:06] it's a huge deal and that's a big deal because some people get really nervous like is it just me why
[00:34:11] are people being so mean to me like I want everyone to know you know it's long that's relatable
[00:34:14] over the last couple years my assistant and I have mentioned you mentioned in passing to other
[00:34:18] patients you tell them how much you appreciate how how easy they are to work on and how much you
[00:34:24] appreciate them being cooperative and like why what do you mean and they're like oh you're the
[00:34:29] you don't you have no idea exactly like we'll kind of go in the this thing in there and all the sudden
[00:34:35] they it you know they're kind of proud of the fact that you know there's people that can open with
[00:34:39] no concern there's people that just fight you on every single thing and it's just uh or scream in
[00:34:43] your face and you wait a seven minute tons of Instagram stuff like that I mean I've seen I've
[00:34:47] seen all those but it's so true relatable stuff yeah yeah none of us are alone and then we also get
[00:34:52] pointers like this we I should say my amazing followers like people will be like what do you say to
[00:34:58] that like how do you respond and people give examples and like they would they strategize like
[00:35:02] this is what I would say this is what I you know what I mean like because I don't have the answers
[00:35:05] that I'm happy to have a platform for people to I think hygiene people hygienists in particular
[00:35:10] are probably much more interactive on Instagram maybe I wonder you know Dr. Josh Austin has thoughts
[00:35:16] on this but oh okay he came in here a little while ago really about no one pays any attention
[00:35:20] right so I'm gonna go pay attention right now yeah so you get you get a lot of you get a lot of
[00:35:24] feedback and that's fantastic very very lucky that is what tells you that you're making a difference
[00:35:29] because if people yeah I mean if they take time to write something and it makes me have
[00:35:33] because it's like a community like they're all helping each other out in the comments section
[00:35:37] and I'm like yes oh that was a good point oh that was a good point or I'll say like this is what
[00:35:40] I would do anyone else have any ideas and like they give all their ideas yeah I'm like this is amazing
[00:35:44] it's it's needs to be a course yeah I need to put this somewhere no let's go yeah I like a safe space
[00:35:49] we're all about the safe space that's cool you know nobody nothing stupid and that's the thing too
[00:35:53] I have a lot of new grads following me like new new graduates right whether it's dental dentists
[00:35:58] or dental hygienists or assistants someone new to the field and they'll come in and just be like
[00:36:02] I'm just trying to learn what's going on and that makes me happy that we have like a safe community
[00:36:06] for them to ask questions nothing stupid there's never a stupid question I didn't know how to put
[00:36:10] topical on when I first started my office sure I was like we didn't really did we do topical school
[00:36:15] I was like so stressed out and like you're afraid to ask stupid questions you know and and that's
[00:36:20] my nothing stupid if you have to if you're not sure how to put the topical in the mouth please ask me
